We must work together for the wellbeing of all

As I write this newsletter we are again in Covid Alert Level 2. I share the frustration of many at how we ended back at Level 2. That is why it is important that ‘We must work together for the wellbeing of all’. Please ensure that if your children are sick they stay home. Seek advice from Healthline on when they are able to return to school. We need to make an effort to scan QR codes when we are out and about. This allows contract tracing to happen quickly.

As a school we are prepared to go to Level 3 should that happen. The school will be allowed to distribute resources such as books and chromebooks in a click and collect way. If we all work together and follow the restrictions then we will be able to return to Level 1 more quickly.

This morning we farewelled the Year 7 and 8 Team as they headed off to Tui Ridge for a 3 day camp. The camp will provide opportunities for our senior students to move out of their comfort zones and try a range of activities from high ropes to rock climbing. My thanks to the team behind the scenes who made this camp possible with the change to Alert Level 2.

Please note that on Monday 8 March there is a Teacher Only Day. Parents will need to make other arrangements for their children on Monday. As part of the Teacher Collective Agreement schools have been given 8 days by the Government to use over 3 years to help with teacher workload. We appreciate the inconvenience that it may cause.

Thomas believes because he sees Jesus.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today’s reading from the Gospel of John is proclaimed on the Second Sunday of Easter in each of the lectionary cycles. This fact alone should alert us to the significance of the encounters with the resurrected Jesus that are described in this reading. This Gospel combines two scenes: Jesus’ appearance to his disciples after his Resurrection and Jesus’ dialogue with Thomas, the disciple who doubted.

Part of the mystery of Jesus’ Resurrection is that he appeared to his disciples not as a spirit, but in bodily form. We do not know, however, exactly what this form looked like. Earlier in John’s Gospel, when Mary of Magdala first encountered the risen Jesus, she did not recognize him until he spoke to her. In Luke’s Gospel, the disciples walking along the road to Emmaus did not recognize Jesus until he broke bread with them. We know from readings such as today’s that in his resurrected form, Jesus was not bound by matter; he appeared to the disciples inside a home even though the door was locked. Yet the disciples could still touch the marks of his Crucifixion.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun; as Jesus was sent by God, so Jesus sends his disciples. He gives his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit so that they will be able to accomplish this task. Jesus’ words to his disciples also highlight the integral connection between the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can share forgiveness and reconciliation with others.

Thomas, the doubting disciple in today’s reading, represents the reality of the Church that comes after this first community of witnesses to Jesus. All but the first disciples of Jesus must believe without seeing. Like Thomas, we may doubt the news that Jesus, who was crucified and buried, appeared to his disciples. Our human nature seeks hard evidence that the Jesus who appeared to his disciples after his death is indeed the same Jesus who was crucified. Thomas is given the opportunity to be our representative in obtaining this evidence. He gives witness to us that the Jesus who was raised is the same Jesus who died. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are among those who are blessed, for we have not seen and yet believe.

PTFA 2021 Annual General Meeting

As part of our charitable tax status, we are required to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM). If you attend one PTFA meeting in a year, make it this one. We will recap the spending and fundraising for the year, and our priorities for 2021. This is happening on Tuesday 23rd March at 7pm in the school staffroom. We will be electing role holders for the next year. Reports will be presented from our president and treasurer. If you are interested in what we do please come along. It is a fun social get-together and refreshments will be provided.

St Joseph's Annual Easter Raffle

This fundraiser has been a big success for us in the past – so please get in behind it. We were amazed as some families sold well in excess of 20 sheets of raffle ticket sheets last year – smashing all previous records! As the PTFA quiz night has been cancelled, due to ongoing uncertainty around Covid-19 alert levels, we will be using some of the donated voucher prizes (from Chartwell Shopping Centre, New World Te Rapa, Hamilton Zoo and Bowl and Social) for our top sellers this year. We ask for each family to sell a sheet of 10 x $2 tickets; and donate an Easter treat item for our hamper prizes. Sheets will be sent home next week if Alert 2 finishes. Sweet Pea Parties will again sponsor our spot prizes for all our ticket sellers.

Pizza Fridays

Our first pizza Friday went well, thanks for your support. We have trialled the Kindo payment system, so please look out to details of when this can be used to make payments. For those who trialled the system, they report it is easy to use, and removes the need to search around for loose change each Friday. Whilst we are in Alert 2, we will not be providing Pizza Lunches.

PTFA Second-hand Uniform Sale

This will be happening on the concrete area in front of the staffroom on April 9th at 2.30pm. We will gratefully accept donations of unwanted unform items to sell, at the school office. Payments will be possible through Kindo.

Please remember to support our school when buying your next Entertainment Book. Proceeds go to the PTFA.

Skids would like to thank all parents for their cooperation during the COVID alert level changes.

Appreciate the nature of our parent's work, SKIDS has booking options that could work around these and at the same time meeting the MSD staff:ratio requirement.

Full time booking: are care for 5 days a week for the whole term.

Part time booking: 1-4 days a week, pre booked at the start of the term

Both options above require 1 week notice to cancel or to request for changes.

Casual booking: not regular in nature, as per needed basis. This booking request is subject to ratio. On most occasions, we cannot accommodate children who are not booked in the system if we are at capacity.

Planning is underway for the winter sports in Term 2. Over the next couple of weeks more information will come out about the different codes available.

The School will cater for Netball and Hockey, other major codes like rugby and soccer will be run through the clubs.

Registration for the 2021 season will be held at the Marist Clubrooms, on Old Farm Road on Sunday 7th March – from 1 – 4pm.

We want to streamline the process and make it as quick as possible for you to get sorted for the 2021 season!!

Pay your subs online prior to Registration and Weigh-to avoid the queues, and we will reconcile, and receipt you on the day. Like express check-in!

The subs this season will be:

$55 1 player / $90 2 players / $120 3 or more players from one family/household

• All players, returning and new registrants, will be weighed in, as per WCJR requirements.

Training / Practises:

Practices are dependent on the availability of coaches and practice venues.

In the past we have had the afternoon practice slot at St John’s 3.30-5.30pm on

Tuesdays. However, this may need to change if needed…it’s dependant on team

numbers. More info to be confirmed once teams are named.

Teams

The biggest change to junior hockey last year is in the Intermediate grades. WHA

and the Junior Division have made the decision to play all intermediate hockey as

Half field games.

• 6 aside + Keeper (Aimed at schools top teams)
• 6 aside no Keeper

With-in these modules there will be grading and then teams will be grouped for

competition.

Coaches/Managers

These teams can only participate if we can provide a Coach and a Manager for

each team. Please let us know if you or someone you know is able to coach a

team.

Umpires

Each team also requires an umpire. If a parent or sibling from each team cannot

be found to umpire, then each parent maybe asked to make a donation towards

paying for an umpire. Usually $10 -$15 a game.

Netball Trials 2021 - 7A, 7B, 8A and 8B

Venue: Minogue Park - Moore Street, Hamilton

Date: Saturday 20 th March 2020

Time: Y7 8am (Year 7’s will trial in 6 aside format)

Y8 10am (Year 8’s will trial in 7 aside format)

Year 7 and 8 students enrolled at St Joseph’s, St Peter Chanel, Marian, St Pius and St

Columba’s Catholic schools are invited to trial for these Saints United teams. The teams are

expected to play competitive netball in a higher grade than what individual school teams can

offer.

Each Saints team will have a squad of approx 9 players chosen at trials by a trio of

independent selectors. The selection policy will be available at trials, and selections will be

final.

Players who are not selected, or who do not trial, will still play netball under the Saints

United umbrella. Every Y7/8 student who wants to play netball will do so. After trials, our

individual schools will make school based teams as usual, combining our players together

only if required to ensure numbers.

We urge and encourage all eligible players to attend trials. Trials offer our netballers

significant participation based experience and learning, and provide valuable preparation for

high school netball.

All players must trial in appropriate sporting mufti. No representative netball (or other rep

sport) shirts are to be worn, and hair and fingernails must be in accordance with netball

rules.

Practice days, times and locations for all Saints United teams will be determined by coaching

availability. The cost per Saints United player will be $65.00 tbc. Each Saints team will

require a coach, manager and umpire, so parents of triallists are asked to consider if/how

they could offer assistance should their child be selected. The final decision on who the

team’s coaches and managers are is decided by the Saints United Committee.

In addition, some parental assistance with trials may be required. Please indicate on the

registration form if you can help on the day.

Congratulations to all the students that participated at the school swimming sports on Friday 19th February. It was a great day and was wonderful to see so many students giving it their best. A big thank you to the parents that helped out with timekeeping. Trophies and certificates will be presented at assembly later in the term.The results are as follows:

NZ COVID Tracer is a Ministry of Health app that allows you to:

• scan the official QR codes to create a private digital diary of the places you visit

• use Bluetooth tracing to keep an anonymised record of the people you've been near

• register your contact details so contact tracers can get in touch if they need to

• save your National Health Index (NHI) number to speed up the process if you need a test

• find your nearest testing centre and access other useful information.

The information we record with the app gives contact tracers a head start whenever COVID-19 re-emerges in the community. By helping contact tracers quickly identify close contacts, we can get ahead of the virus and quickly break the chain of transmission.

The first Rototuna Rotary Family Fun Day was originally conceived as a fundraiser and the event was to have various Cycle Rides with the goal of establishing an annual community event based in Rototuna. The onset of COVID-19 and the ensuing lockdowns resulted, not only in the immediate cancellation of the original 2020 event, but has also had an ongoing impact across our communities and families and this year’s event. The most recent level changes have also had an effect and with further delays signalled on some permits, we have decided to go ahead with the first annual Rototuna Rotary Family Fun Day setting ticket pricing at $0.00 for the cycle rides.

Rototuna Rotary will continue to support our schools and the ‘Library of Things’ initiative for the Rototuna Village Library. We plan to build on this inaugural event with bigger things in the works for 2022.
