MSHS Tuesday Newsday
May 2, 2023
PRINCIPAL NEWS
Happy Tuesday!
NY State Math testing in grades 6-8 will take place through Computer Based Testing (CBT) tomorrow and Thursday. We also began our Advanced Placement Tests yesterday and all seems to be going according to plan. I wish the best to all of our students.
Last week and yesterday we had our first two Unified Basketball games, coached by Mr. Veteri, and both the student turnout and energy was tremendous. Great job all around by our players and partners. Thank you for all who turned out to support our students.
We are gearing up for our annual Mental Health and Wellness Fair on May 18 and are hoping the weather will cooperate, otherwise we will be "gym-bound". Once again we have a full slate of fantastic mental health and community partners.
Tonight in the MSHS Library the League of Women Voters is hosting a "Meet the Candidate" Night for the upcoming Board of Education nominees at 7 p.m.
Regards,
Mr. DiGrandi

MENTAL HEALTH NEWS
ADHD and Food
If you have a child with ADHD, you hear a lot about how changing their diet may reduce hyperactivity or help them focus in school, and some parents share stories of improvements they’ve seen in their kids. So, we looked to see what evidence there is that taking kids off things like sugar and food coloring or putting them on supplements helps.
This week we look at studies — some conflicting — about ADHD and food. What we do know: Cutting back on sugary food and drinks is good for the brain (and lots of other things), but it won’t make ADHD go away. And ADHD can make it harder for kids to eat a healthy diet — they may lose their appetite during the school day and then binge on snacks when they come home ravenous. This week we also round up stories about how exercise affects ADHD symptoms, how ADHD causes behavior problems, and how to help your child with that incredibly messy room.

News from the Nurse
Spring has sprung and so have seasonal allergies (also called hay fever and allergic rhinitis)!
It's the season for sneezing and itching. New York is listed as one of the top 20 Allergy Capitals based on total pollen scores (tree, grass, and weed), over-the-counter medication use (allergy), and the number of allergy specialists.
Common seasonal allergy signs and symptoms include:
- sneezing
- itchy nose and/or throat
- nasal congestion
- clear, runny nose
- post nasal drip
Is it a cold or allergies?
Click HERE to learn the difference:
Reduce your exposure to allergy triggers:
To reduce your exposure to the things that trigger your allergy signs and symptoms (allergens):
- Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air.
- Remove clothes you've worn outside and shower to rinse pollen from your skin and hair.
- Don't hang laundry outside — pollen can stick to sheets and towels.
- Wear a face mask if you do outside chores.
- Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rainfall, this helps clear pollen from the air.
- Limit outdoor play that occurs in the grass and shrubs.
- Wash hands and face after coming in from playing outside.
- If your child's eyes are puffy from pollen, start by rinsing their eyes gently with tap water.
- Taking a bath or shower at bedtime, washing your hair, and changing pillowcases daily will decrease prolonged exposure.
Take extra steps when pollen counts are high:
Seasonal allergy signs and symptoms can flare up when there's a lot of pollen in the air. These steps can help you reduce your exposure:
- Check your local TV or radio station, your local newspaper, or the internet for pollen forecasts and current pollen levels.
- Close doors and windows at night if possible or any other time when pollen counts are high.
- Avoid outdoor activity in the early morning when pollen counts are highest.
- Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air.
- Avoid lawn mowing, weed pulling, and other gardening chores that stir up allergens.
Keep indoor air clean:
There's no miracle product that can eliminate all allergens from the air in your home, but these suggestions may help:
- Use air conditioning in your house and car.
- If you have forced air heating or air conditioning in your house, use high-efficiency filters and follow regular maintenance schedules.
- Keep indoor air dry with a dehumidifier.
- Use a portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your bedroom.
- Clean floors often with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter.
Despite seasonal allergies, taking precautions will help you enjoy the spring season!
