Thoughts from Dr. Voelkl
Happy Sunday to all,
This week marks our final week before the start of our now traditional Fall Break and the conclusion of our first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year. If you had asked me on day one of this school year if we would have "made it" to this point my answer would have been a pretty definitive no. I am so PROUD of our teachers, so IMPRESSED by our students and so GRATEFUL for our parents. Our Saint Charles Borromeo village came together and in doing so not only survived but thrived over the course of these last few weeks and months. Traditionally, this is the newsletter where I offer helpful tips and questions for talking and sharing with teachers during conferences. I will share more information on this in a separate email on TUESDAY along with REPORT CARDS. This morning I wanted to share a bit about regarding the reflection process as you review and reflect on your child's progress later this week. I came upon a quote this weekend that spoke to me as a parent and educator, "There is enormous social pressure on parents for their kids not just to be the best they can be, but to be on par with, if not demonstrably better than, their peers." God blessed each of us with the amazing gifts of our children, and while each of them are fearfully and wonderfully made, they are all inherently different. Thus, I encourage you to look at your child's growth and progress over time. Did they put forth their best effort? Did they rise to their potential? Did they use their gifts and talents to the best of their ability? Just like every child on the soccer team cannot be the star goal scorer, every child in the classroom cannot be the highest achiever academically. Our goal and our responsibility is to meet kiddos where they are and grow them accordingly. Of course, there may be instances in which teachers notice certain habits, practices and/or behaviors that are hindering a child's growth. They enjoy the opportunity to dialogue with you openly and honestly so that we can adapt, adjust and modify our plans to meet the needs or each individual child. The greatest gift you can give your child is to celebrate them for their gifts, hold them accountable when they make choices that hinder them from reaching their potential, provide them with the love and support needed to grow, and hold honest and realistic expectations for their achievements. I loved playing basketball as a child. My dad will tell you that I was a pretty good point guard :-) I am five feet two inches on a good day. I was never going to be a star but I worked hard, played hard and enjoyed almost every minute of my dad encouraging me on the court. THANK YOU for continuing to share your children with them. We are always blessed to spend another day on this journey with them ~
