Partnering with Starbucks to Celebrate Kindness
In celebration of Kindness Week, Northmead Elementary (NM) School's Kindness Club has partnered with Patterson Starbucks on Ward Avenue to give out commemorative coffee sleeves that have been hand decorated by our NM Cubs the week of February 12-16, 2024.
The Kindness Club is led by club president, Samira Gonzalez Infante, and advised by School Counselor, Denise Perez, and Student Support Specialist Brittany Ortiz. The newly founded club will be engaging in random acts of kindness around Northmead every day next week; however wanted an opportunity to extend that kindness out to members of our community. Perez reached out to Starbucks with this unique idea and they (Starbucks) obliged the opportunity to connect with our students and provided them with an avenue to do so.
This week, our students received 3,000 coffee cup sleeves to decorate with kind messages to share with our community. Every student at Northmead has had an opportunity to share their unique voice/message with a lucky coffee purchasing customer. In addition to kind messages, each sleeve will contain a Northmead Cubs sticker so, highlighting the collaborative effort between our school and our partners at Starbucks.
Be sure to visit Starbucks on Ward Avenue to pick up your one-of-a-kind coffee cup sleeve next week (February 12-16) between 6:00 am and 11:00 am to join our schools in celebrating Kindness Week, and to receive your very own kind message from our students to start off your day.

Improving Literacy through the Science of Reading
The PJUSD Strategic Plan, also known as the PJUSD Promise, is a commitment to the academic achievement of our students. As stated in the PJUSD Strategic Plan, 'Fostering student achievement is a central focus of the PJUSD Promise. It is our goal to ensure students are supported with rigorous academic experiences that prepare them to be college and/or career ready upon graduation."
On January 25, over 70 PJUSD leaders, including teachers, instructional coaches, support staff, and site and district administrators, participated in the first of a five-day PJUSD Leadership Academy to learn about the practices that accelerate student learning that align with our PJUSD Promise. During the session, PJUSD leaders learned about the Science of Reading and how to best support our students to ensure they master the skills and strategies necessary to become proficient readers. The Science of Reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world, and it is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties.
Our PJUSD Promise is to ensure academic excellence for all students. Ensuring all our students are proficient readers is the foundation of our academic excellence. Over the next several months, PJUSD Leaders will learn more about the Science of Reading and will develop a comprehensive plan to ensure it is implemented in PJUSD. In doing so, we will realize our commitment and promise to our PJUSD students, parents and the community- academic excellence and achievement for all of our students.

Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and LCAP Advisory Committee
The Local Control Accountability Plan, or LCAP, is a three-year plan that describes the goals, actions, services, and expenditures to support positive student outcomes that address state and local priorities. The LCAP provides an opportunity for PJUSD to share our plan of how, what, and why programs and services are selected to meet our students’ needs.
A component of the development of PJUSD’s LCAP is to gather feedback and recommendations from educational partners (parents, community members, staff, to name a few). PJUSD will be hosting LCAP Advisory Committee meetings at the PJUSD District Office Professional Development Center (510 Keystone Blvd., Patterson) on the following dates and times to gather educational partner feedback on the development of our LCAP:
2/21/24, 5:00-6:30
3/13/24, 5:00-6:30
4/10/24, 5:00-6:30
5/8/24, 5:00-6:30
For further information regarding the LCAP or the LCAP Advisory Committee, please contact Ryan Gonzales, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, at (209) 895-7700, or by email at rygonzales@patterson.k12.ca.us.

Keeping our Schools Green and Clean
With the onset of poor weather conditions, there arises a significant need for preparation and maintenance, including repairs and cleaning, at our school sites to ensure they remain welcoming and visually appealing. Here are just a few recent projects that our Custodial, Grounds, Maintenance, and Operations Teams have worked on:
- Turf Installation at Walnut Grove Elementary - Adding new green spaces for our students to enjoy
- Tree Trimming at CMS & PHS: Mitigating the impact of strong winds while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of our fields and campuses.
- Flood Prevention, Power Outages & More: When rainfall intensifies, our team springs into action, deploying sandbags, generators, portable equipment, and even water management strategies. Whether it's before, during, or after school hours, our team is always prepared to ensure our schools can deliver education in a clean and safe environment.
