Week of October 30th, 2023
Halloween at FES
This Tuesday (October 31st), students are encouraged to wear their halloween costumes to school. Classes may use the afternoon to have classroom celebrations. If treats are sent in, please remember that according to school policy, they must be store-bought and include an ingredients list. FOR THE MOST PART, OUR SCHOOL DRESS CODE IS STILL IN EFFECT THAT DAY. Students may wear hats, but no masks. No weapons of any kind will be permitted. Blood and gore is not appropriate for costumes worn to school.

A Reminder about Food in the FES Cafeteria
Our cafeteria manager would like to remind everyone that none of the food in the FES cafeteria contains pork products. If you have any questions, please contact melody.linneman@boone.kyschools.us.

Meet the Hard Workers in Our Cafeteria!
Ms. Linda Black
Linda Black has worked in the FES cafeteria for 17 years. She went to elementary school at Taylor Mill Elementary and Bishop Howard School in Covington. She has two cats, and in her spare time she enjoys taking walks and shopping. Ms. Black, thanks for all your hard work for the last 17 years!

Here's What We're Learning This Week!
Kindergarten
Reading/Writing- We are starting our writing unit with learning about what Writers do. We are excited to do this.
Math-We are learning about 3-D shapes and heavy and light. See if your children can find things around your house for these things.
Science- We are working on weather patterns.
Social Studies- We are learning about community helpers.
1st Grade
Reading/Writing- We will be reading about kindness and what being kind means this week!
Math- We will continue to make 10 to add, and then review making 10 and making teen numbers in the later half of the week.
Social Studies- We will be learning about the world, specifically the continents and oceans.
2nd Grade
Reading/Writing- Students will be reading narrative nonfiction texts.
Math- Students will continue our measuring unit. They continue with inches and centimeters but also add in feet and meeting.
Social Studies- Students will be working on identifying renewable and nonrenewable resources.
3rd Grade
Reading/Writing- Students will work on describing the relationship between individuals, a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts or steps in technical procedures over the course of a text.
Math- Student will continue to fluently multiply within 100. They will also use multiplication within 100 to solve word problems.
Social Studies- Students will be learning about the culture in India. Students will study the relationship between population growth and resource use. They will describe traits that define cultures. They will explain the relationship among religious ideas.
Other 3rd Grade Info: Students will be presenting their pumpkin book reports on Monday and Tuesday.
4th Grade
Reading/Writing- Students will continue making inferences while reading information texts. Begin to look for text features.
Math- Students will understand that multiplication is repeated addition. Students will begin to learn factors, and multiples.
Science- Students will learn about different types of waves.
Social Studies- Students will work on mapping skills.
Other information from 4th Grade: Students will be taking the MVPA (a standardized assessment) on Monday and Tuesday. Please be sure they get enough sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast!
5th Grade
Reading/Writing-Students will be using context clues to understand vocabulary.
Math-Students will be multiplying multi-digit numbers using multiple strategies.
Science- Students will be learning about food chains, producers, and consumers.
Social Studies- Students will be working on an Early Foreign Policy DBQ.
STEM
Kindergarten is learning about weather patterns and seasons. First grade is learning about patterns in the night sky, including the moon and stars. Second grade is continuing to learn about material properties and changes in matter. Third grade is continuing a Project Lead the Way unit on the forces of flight. Fourth grade is continuing a Project Lead the Way unit on energy. Fifth grade is learning about ecosystems.
Physical Education
For the Month of October all Grade Level will focus on throwing and catching skills. Kindergarten will be introduced to throwing cues and catching skills. First grade is learning the cues of a proper throw and catching skills. Second grade is learning the cues to throwing to a target and catching skills. Third grade is reviewing the mechanics of a proper throw and catching skills using a target. Fourth grade is reviewing the mechanics of a proper throw and catching skills using a target Fifth grade is reviewing the throw mechanics and using cues to play a catching and throwing activities. SEL: Practice Kindness
Music
Melody, the main idea of a song and how notes move to create an idea. Line and space names of the treble clef staff. Grades 2-5 will be learning a song about Veterans
Art
K&1 are learning about the ocean and creating different art with ocean animals. 2&3 are creating sea gull collages with several different materials. 4&5 are creating lighthouse collages with several different materials. 2-5 all learned about how to draw cylinders to use in their collages.

In order to alleviate delays, please be sure to be at the designated bus stop five minutes prior to the stop time.
Also be aware that eating and drinking are not permitted on the buses for health and safety reasons.

SBDM Update (UPDATED FROM LAST WEEK)
The School Based Decision Making Council at FES is made up of the principal (Ryan Burch), three teachers (Alicia Bachman, Abbigail Supe, and Megan Timmerding), and two parents (Alicia Coulter and Vee Miller). This group makes policy decisions and approves some of the school's financial and instructional activities. Meetings are usually held on the first Monday of each month at 4:15 in the FES library. Meetings are open to the public (except for occasional closed sessions). At the October SBDM meeting, council voted to hire an additional 5th grade teacher. More information will be sent home to parents of 5th graders soon.
The November meeting will be held November 6th at 4:15 in the FES library.
