This week in particular I have spent more time than most applying my skills as an educator in the classroom. I still laugh at times when the students respond with, "Wait, you know how to teach!" I truly LOVE the art of teaching and LOVE watching our St. Charles Borromeo teachers come alive when working with and among our students. One of the assignments we completed in 2nd grade this week was drafting a letter explaining all of the things we LOVED about St. Charles Borromeo. In true 7 and 8 year old fashion they talked about recess, games in gym class, favorite lunches and friends. They also talked about the teachers they love, getting to go to Mass, learning, exploring and creating. I am grateful that for all of them SCB was a place where they felt loved. As we move through these next months and even years the St. Louis Archdiocese will continue to move through a very comprehensive and prayed upon strategic plan. The ALL THINGS NEW plan is meant not simply to move us forward but to move us together as a Catholic community united in our faith. This year has certainly been unique as we continue to make our way through COVID protocols, increased vigilance in monitoring symptoms etc. Alas, when able, the best way for the majority of our students to grow and learn is when they arrive on time and attend school in person. While we know that absences due to illness are more difficult to control, we encourage all families to schedule outside activities, appointments and trips when school is not in session. As a mom whose children compete in various competitive sports, I have watched the world vastly change in recent years with increased competitions, tournaments, games etc. scheduled on week days. Please note, that if your child falls into this category it is important to teach them to communicate early and often with their classroom teachers regarding the completion of assignments and catching up with missed work. As an educator married to an educator, I have always envied the ability to vacation at will during the school year. While we also know that this comes with more affordability, we also encourage you to check in with your children and teachers to see what your child will be missing. For some of our students missing school, making up work and missing more class time in order to do so causes unnecessary anxiety. LAST, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do all that you can to ensure that your child arrives at school on time ready to learn. I am certain that mornings are a treat in many households but arriving on time, prepared and ready is an invaluable life skill. THANK YOU for your support in these efforts!

ENROLLMENT for current families is OPEN. This includes current families who will be enrolling new siblings in our preschool and/or day school programs. We are anxious for the coming of SPRING. With spring many of our BASK employees will resume their training schedules for various athletic pursuits. If you are aware of any high school or college age students interested in working in our after school program please contact us bask@borromeoschool.com for more details and information.

There are a few different options available to families to assist with tuition costs. The Today and Tomorrow foundation flyer was sent to families last week. The original flyer can be found below for those who might have missed it. There are also tuition grants available through the parish. These grants can ONLY be applied after one has already applied for assistance through the archdiocese. This letter is also linked below. Again, please let us know if you have any questions related to these opportunities.

Please find a copy of our 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR pictured and attached below. We have pulled out some important dates for you to assist with any future planning. One item of note / change from previous years' calendars. Every third Wednesday is marked with an aqua blue square to indicate a 2:15 dismissal for all students. Students who cannot be picked up at this time will be able to stay and care will be provided free of charge. Any students remaining after 3:00 pm will be filtered into our BASK program and BASK rates will apply. This time will be utilized by teachers to work in Professional Learning Communities to further their growth as instructional leaders.

We will be sharing the final version of our 2022-2023 school year calendar shortly. For planning purposes please the following important dates ~

We will continue to operate our before BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL KIDS program for the upcoming school year. We will accept BASK enrollment forms for the new school year when school enrollment opens. The form for enrolling in the program is included below. All paperwork can be turned into the main office. While this information is not typically sent out until closer to the start of the new school year, we wanted to provide a complete financial picture sooner than later for those families potentially in need of this care. All families and students are welcome to register for our BASK program at any time throughout the school year. If you have a high school or college aged student who is interested in working in our BASK program we are always looking for new responsible employees as well!

At this time there are no plans for any significant changes to either our school lunch program or our school uniforms. As we get closer to the start of the school year Food Service Consultants will contact us with detailed information regarding menus, cost etc. There is typically a slight increase in the cost of lunch each day but it is still too early to determine. Fischer's, our uniform company, will be offering a discounted rate for Borromeo families Sunday, May 29th through Saturday, June 4th for all in store and online orders. (SEE FLYER LINKED BELOW) They are not able to share a new set price list with us at this time for uniform items as they are awaiting information from their distributors.

• Masks may be used at the discretion of the teacher (group activities that require students to be close to each other)

While we would LOVE to say that those reaching out with symptoms of runny noses and mild sore throats are suffering from spring colds that is simply not the case. In our experience most of these symptoms have resulted in a positive COVID case. We want our kiddos in school and need staff to teach them. Continuing to monitor symptoms and returning when they have subsided will allow us to do so.

Each year during Catholic Schools week (January 30th – February 4th) we have our Annual Teacher and Staff Appreciation Luncheon. This is an opportunity for our teachers to eat lunch in a fun and relaxing way together and without any task at hand other than fellowship with one another. They truly love this opportunity.

In order for this event to take place, it takes volunteers across all grades to sign up to work in their child’s classroom. Below you will find a sign-up for volunteering in the classrooms. Teachers will provide activities and provide you a schedule, many classrooms have their lunch and recess during this time so volunteering is easy. This is a great way to say thank you to that teacher and also get to hang with your kiddo and their friends!

We are grateful for ALL OF OUR Cafe helpers. Our first session (11:00-12:00) is a slower pace with K-3 students and is mostly helping open items, pass out disposable silverware and condiments, help kiddos stand in line patiently for recess, and help wipe off tables. The second session (12:00-1:00) is a much faster pace yet has lots of kiddos 4-8 grade in and out of the Cafe in less than an hour. This is mostly monitoring/walking the room and helping wipe off tables. Thank you in advance and thank you to those who have helped in the past and continue to help!
