Principal's Note
Happy New Year! I can't believe we are in 2024. As is customary each year, all of our classes are discussing new year goals.
As a school, we are working on monthly goals, one academic and one related to behavior. Here are our goals for January:
1. School Behavior Goal: By the end of January, we aim to have over 500 'Otter Paws,' demonstrating our commitment to the Otter Way: Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Kind.
2. School Academic Goal: During the FastBridge assessment weeks (January 8th-19th), our goal is to be well-prepared, give our best effort, and respect others. This will help us improve our reading and math scores from the Fall.
Here are some ways you can help your students as they prepare for the FastBridge assessment:
- Ensure they get a good night's sleep.
- Provide a healthy breakfast.
- Encourage them to stay positive.
- Use encouraging words.
Finally, we are asking parents to donate snacks for students to have during their testing window. We are looking for items like mints, gum, crackers, and cookies in individual packages. If you are able to donate any of these items, please send them to the office anytime during the next two weeks. We will distribute them to the classes taking the assessment.
Thank you again for your support and collaboration.
Un abrazo,
Mrs. Bell

Library with Mrs. Zuelsdorf 📖
We have been sharing some great winter books together in Kindergarten and doing fun activities that connect to our stories. First grade has also been enjoying winter read alouds but also got to explore and learn about how to use Pebble Go for research. 2nd-5th grade has been doing all sorts of fun coding activities and also got to watch some book trailers in hopes of finding some new books that they might want to read and/or checkout.
Art with Mrs. Becker 🎨
Kindergarten: In kindergarten we are creating art that celebrates and explores winter! Students will be creating Polar Bear Paintings and Alphabet Soup Art. We are focusing on skills like drawing lines, dexterity, and following step by step directions.
1st Grade: This month 1st graders are starting the year out by creating Teacup Kitten Art, this is a great way for us to practice dexterity and explore patterns while also learning how to draw kittens. In our second project this month Otters will be learning about the artist Keith Haring and creating a piece inspired by his work.
2nd Grade: In 2nd grade students are starting out January by creating a winter landscape featuring the Northern lights with chalk, paper, and printmaking supplies. Students have loved learning about the northern lights! In our second project this month students will learn about the artist Mary Blair, who was an illustrator for Disney in the 1940's and will be creating a collage inspired by her work.
3rd Grade: For January art, 3rd graders are starting the year by learning about Gentoo penguins and creating a Penguin Painting - it is a favorite of mine! Students have loved adding details to their penguins that help tell viewers about penguins habitats, diets, and how they care for their young.
4th Grade: It is an exciting time to be a 4th grader at Meadow View because this month we are starting our clay unit! Students will be creating Pinch Pot Animal Sculptures. Students will be choosing their own animals to sculpt, creating a rough draft or sketch, sculpting their ideas, and painting their sculptures.
5th Grade: This month, 5th graders are learning about the artistic movement Realism and the artist Chuck Close. Students will be using pencil to draw and shade a realistic human eye with a painted rainbow iris!
Music with Mrs. Glover 🎵
We are off and running to start 2024 in music. I wanted to share some important dates that are coming up for our musicians!
3rd grade caregivers are welcome to participate in our Community Folk Dance informance. More information will be sent home next week, but please note the following dates and times. If you are able to join in the fun, we would love to have you, and bring your dancing shoes:)
Mrs. Reid's Class: February 6 (Tuesday), 9-9:30am
Mx. Wolfe's Class: February 7 (Wednesday) 9-9:30am
Mrs. Varma's Class: February 9th (Friday) 9:30-10am
5th grade has also begun preparing for their music program titled "March Madness" which will be performed for caregivers and students Wednesday, March 20th at 1:30 in the gym.
4th grade is working on their music selections that they will be performing for the All City Choir Festival, Monday, March 11th at 7pm at West High School. More information will be sent home as this date gets closer.
The 2nd grade program, as well as Kindergarten and 1st grade informances, will be shared as we get closer to May.
Orchestra with Mr. Marjamaa 🎻
The 5th Grade Orchestra did a great job at the concert in December! For the month of January, students will be learning new songs for their next concert in February.
P.E. with Mr. Fechtner and Mr. Tooz 🏀
We are doing our Omnikin ball unit which is a really large lightweight ball that we love. Then, as long as it snows, we will get to explore on the side of our gym in a variety of ways using snowshoes and skis. Lastly, at the end of January going into February, we will begin one of our favorite units of roller blading. You are allowed to bring your own skates and helmet if you choose, but it's not expected as we have plenty of skates, helmets and wrist guards of all sizes for all of our otters!

Discounted Summer Programming at Lussier Center!
Dane County Parks is so excited to be hosting its first full summer of camp at Lussier Family Heritage Center. To make our camp more inclusive, we are offering fee assistance to cover the cost of a week of camp. Families may apply for full tuition coverage or partial. We are hoping that this opportunity will allow for a child’s dream of going to camp a reality this summer!
They will not ask for proof of income or government assistance through the process. They will begin reviewing and offering fee assistances starting Feb. 1st and on a rolling basis until all spots are full. This program is supported through the Land and Water Resources Department and the Foundation for Dane County Parks.
