International Festival 2021: Keeping Us Connected

A popular event since 1989, the International Festival has taken attendees on a trip around the world—without leaving Michigan—to enjoy some of the music, foods, fashions and traditional dances of many cultures. The annual event has provided thousands of students and community members the chance to experience food, culture and fashion from around the world through booth displays and performances brought to life by WMU international and cultural RSO’s.

Although virtual, International Festival 2021: Keeping Us Connected will continue the long-standing celebration of the diversity of WMU students. The three-night program will feature video submissions from international and cultural RSO's as well as discussions on the importance of global engagement by University students, staff, faculty and administrators.

Caste Book Club

Kathy Purnell, staff attorney for Justice for Our Neighbors and part-time instructor in in the School of Public Affairs and Administration, will be leading discussions of Caste (2020) by Isabel Wilkerson. Wilkerson argues that there is a deep hierarchical system underlining who has power and who does not in every society. She describes the pillars of this system and how they manifest in different times and places, including the United States, India, and Nazi Germany. The book raises questions about the political and personal destructiveness of categories that unjustly pit us against each other. Upon registration, the Center for the Study of Ethics in Society will send participants information for joining the meetings.

" This three credit virtual study abroad experience will occur online in Summer I over the course of three weeks, with no required travel. The course is open to all majors at WMU. This format offers students a more financially affordable option to engage in a study abroad experience during the current Covid-19 pandemic .

In this virtual study abroad class, students will have the opportunity to further expand their cross-cultural knowledge, awareness and competencies. The focus of the course is exposing students to education system, culture and sports in Croatia. Students will have an opportunity to traverse virtually through the beautiful Croatian coast along the Adriatic Sea, and visit the most popular and historic Croatian cities of Zagreb, Pula, Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik. The course will also include content on the culture and history of Venice, Italy, and will be delivered through a combination of lectures, discussions and virtual activities through synchronous meetings in E-learning." - Program Faculty Director; Dr. Zeljka Vidic

The Job

Summer 21st Century Youth Development Worker (YDW) is an educator that provides fun, positive and enriching afternoon experiences for students during the BCPS Summer Program. Summer YDW creates and facilitates programming for students at elementary and secondary summer school sites. Summer YDW collaborates with other YDWs and the Summer Extended Learning Coordinators to deliver engaging, hands-on activities that enhance a child’s reading, writing, math, science and social-emotional learning skills.

Specifically, the Summer YDW will:

• Serve as a positive role model
• Support students SEL skills during during summer
• Facilitate engaging programming activities

• Education background in math, STEM, arts, literacy backgrounds preferred

• Demonstrated experience working with youth development program(s)

• Ability to pay close attention to and manage details while maintaining focus on the big picture

• Ability to organize and prioritize

• Understand and embrace diversity and inclusion

• A criminal history and background check is required

As most of you know, my name is Danielle Snow and I am the Sexual Assault Prevention Education Coordinator. I oversee our FIRE! Sexual Assault Peer Educators and FIRE Place Resource and Support Center. I wanted to share with you some amazing events we have coming up this week and next!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)! Because of this, we are hosting different events throughout the first two weeks of April to honor our survivors and our healing journeys. Our theme this year is A Journey Forward. The take home message is that healing is not linear, quick, or effortless! Nevertheless, no matter where we are on our journey of healing, we have survived and we are not alone! Please share these events with any students, faculty, or staff that might be interested in participating! You will find our digital poster attached to this email. • Bronco Support Cards Workshop: In this workshop, WMU students will come together to create Bronco Support Cards. We will use healing art to express our emotions related to systemic sexual and gender-based violence. These cards will be collected and displayed in the FIRE Place Resource and Support Center and online.

• Reclaiming Sex and Intimacy after Trauma: Moving from surviving to thriving is not easy. For some, this means a reclamation of their sensual and sexual relationships with self and others. This workshop will be speaking to and centering survivors and consists of a slideshow presentation, group discussion, and participants will receive a detailed handout outlining the steps discussed in the presentation.
