Welcome Back to School!!!
Please note that parents and visitors will not be permitted to walk students to class on the first day. We will have staff throughout the building to assist students as needed. Meet the Teacher Night is a great time to get the lay of the land and be sure everyone is comfortable with coming in that first day!
Important Information
Athletics: 5th & 6th grade students are eligible for participation in athletics. No athlete may begin practice without a sports physical on file. Visit Final Forms to complete registration for athletics. Sixth grade athletes may ride their regularly assigned bus to Webo for after-school practices. If they are not assigned to a bus, arrangements should be made with the transportation department (lisa.pearson@webo.k12.in.us) to get an assigned bus for shuttle from Thorntown to Webo. Remember - band and choir students will be transported to Webo for the last period of the day, and they can stay there for practice as applicable.
Arrival & Dismissal: The first few days are very exciting for our students, so to help things go smoothly, it is important for them the nail down important details about arrival and dismissal. Always make us aware of changes with dismissal as early as possible, so we have time to prepare your child before sending students home.
Breakfast will be served until 7:50 daily. We encourage students to arrive by 7:35 if they plan to eat breakfast at school.
Car riders: Enter the drop-off line from 75 and circle around to the south doors. There will be 3 lanes, and we will direct traffic to alternate the release of students from each lane. Webo families who are assigned Thorntown as their bus stop should be in the left lane and they should arrive in time for students to board their bus at 7:35. Busses cannot be held for late arrivals. Staff members will be there each morning to greet you. Please do not release students from your car until a staff member signals to do so. The line will move quickly if students exit vehicles as soon as you are lined up along the sidewalk. Talk to your child about walking down the sidewalk and being alert to others who are dropping off. For dismissal, we will signal for cars to pull into the loading zone, alternating between the 3 lanes. Until we know your vehicle, it helps to have a sign in your window with the names of students you are picking up. We will radio for students to come to the loading zone as you pull forward. If students need assistance with safety retrains, we encourage you to pull forward out the loading zone to pull over and help with that. This will help maintain a steady traffic flow.
Walkers/Bike Riders: Students who walk or ride a bike to school should travel down Vine Street and cross Mill Street with Marilyn, our wonderful crossing guard, who is stationed in front of our school. Vine and Mill are closed to car traffic during arrival and dismissal. Parents or loved ones who walk to/from school with their children can gather at the flagpole and we'll send students to you once we see you present. It's a bit of a community block party when the weather is nice! Talk with your children about street safety and discourage cutting across to the gas station as there is not staff at that end of the road to help them cross.
Bus Riders: We will load and unload busses in the new bus lot on the east side of the building. Please note that students are assigned a specific bus and are not permitted to ride a bus home with a friend. Our routes are established with bus capacity in mind. For transportation questions, please contact Lisa Pearson at the Administration Office.
Visitors/Volunteers: We are excited to welcome parent volunteers and visitors for special events. We ask that visitors arrive after 8:15 to allow us to get through arrival and secure the building, before opening up the sign-in stations. We will not have visitors join students for lunch, as no visitors will be permitted in the cafeteria during meal times. Please note that all volunteers and visitors to the school must scan in with a driver's license or government-issued identification each time they visit. Volunteers will need to complete a criminal background check prior to helping with classrooms or attending field trips. Regular volunteers will still need their identification to be scanned prior to entry each time they visit. Don't leave home without it! There is limited visitor parking in front of the school. For regular volunteers or visitors who will be here for a good portion of the day, we encourage you to park in the east bus lot which is available for parking between 8:00-2:00 on school days. This lot must be cleared for arrival and dismissal.
Meal Prices: You may set up a meal account by clicking here. This will allow you to deposit funds and receive an alert when your balance is low. If you prefer to send lunch money to school with your child, you can pay by cash or check. Your child can turn the money into his/her teacher or directly to the cafeteria manager. To apply for meal assistance, click here.
Snacks & Water Bottles: Students are permitted to bring a snack for individual consumption each day. We ask that they do not store snack for multiple days, as it can attract critters. Students are also invited to bring a water bottle each day, filled only with water.
PE and Recess: We will have PE all year at Thorntown this year. Students will rotate through Music, PE, and Technology this semester. Next semester, we will swap music for art. Students will need clean shoes for PE in the gym. They are encouraged to keep a pair at school to change into as needed on PE days. We will be outside for recess whenever the weather permits. Close-toed shoes are highly recommended. We have a mulch surface and construction has occurred on much of the property this summer. Keep our piggies safe with appropriate play shoes.
