Bremerton School Board Updates
The Board held its annual elections at their December School Board meeting. For the 2023 calendar year, Director Alyson Rotter will continue to serve as Board President, and Director John Hurley will continue as Vice-President.
Dr. Steedman provided the year-end General Fund Closing Report as well as the General Fund Status Report for the current school year.
BHS Athletic Director Amber Plummer gave an an update on BHS athletics, and introduced just a few of our outstanding athletes from girls swimming, boys tennis, girls volleyball, football and cross country, including Enzo Alonso Fernandez (photo, left). Enzo is an exchange student from Spain who is attending BHS. He broke the school cross country (XC) record this fall, running the 5k XC course in just 16:16!

December highlights
December was a busy month with many fun and exiting events and activities in our schools. Here are a few highlights!
Hispanic and Latino Family Night
In December, we welcomed our Hispanic and Latino families to a night of celebration with the Kitsap Immigration Assistance Center (KIAC) that included live music!
MVMS students Zoom with Hamilton Cast
Students at Mountain View Middle School got to participate in a Q&A with Hamilton cast members (Yes - that Hamilton!). Students in history class were asked to submit a brief statement about why they wanted to participate in this exciting opportunity, coordinated by Anne Pedelaborde! View photos.
View Ridge students perform at the Kitsap Mall
View Ridge Elementary Arts Academy took over the Kitsap Mall on December 2, performing for a crowd of more than 400. The kids were thrilled to share all their hard work with their families and the community. December was a busy month for View Ridge Otters! The fifth grade students production of "Space Pirates" was December 7, and the school also held a winter concert December 13! View photos.
West Hills Students Enjoyed "Donuts with Grownups!"
West Hill STEM Academy started a new tradition this year, inviting families to join their students for breakfast at their "Donuts with Grown-Ups" event! View photos.
Crownhill kindergarten students perform
After performing for neighbors at the Bay Point Assisted Living Community, Crownhill kindergarten students performed for their parents in the Crownhill library!
Naval Avenue Elementary hosts Jingle Bell Jog
Naval Avenue Elementary hosted their first ever Jingle Bell Jog to collect food donations for the Bremerton Backpack Brigade and hats and gloves for Georgia House, a shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness. More than 130 students, staff, and community members earned a jingle bell for each lap they ran. A huge shout out goes to first grade teacher Samantha Johnson for planning the event and making it happen! Be on the lookout for more Naval Avenue events soon! View photos.
Bremerton High School winter assembly
The BHS Winter Pep Assembly, organized by the ASB officers, featured, among other things, the wildly popular staff versus students basketball game (If you were wondering... the students won!). View photos.
BHS-MVMS choir concert
The Bremerton High School and Mountain View Middle School choirs shared the stage in their annual Winter Concert. Students showcased their performance skills in different languages, with songs of many different styles, and included a number of outstanding solos! It's always fun to hear the progression of our vocal music program as they grow from 6th graders through high school. View photos.
BHS students spread holiday cheer with winter letters project
ASB also organized a winter letters event. Students in Mrs. Wagner's art classes created art for the cards, and student volunteers got together on Wednesday, December 7th to handwrite messages of joy for every staff member and student. More than 1,300 handwritten cards were distributed! Below are a few examples of our students' amazing artwork for this project!
Thank you Firefighters!
Firefighters representing local fire departments recently visited View Ridge Elementary Arts Academy (see photos below) and West Hills STEM Academy, delivering 300 new winter coats to students!
"Coats for Kids" is an International Association of Firefighters program, coordinated through the Kitsap Firefighters Benevolent Fund Locals 437 (Bremerton), 2819 (CK, NK, Poulsbo), and 2876 (South Kitsap).
"We feel that serving our community goes beyond responding to calls for 911, said Tyler Hoskins with the Bremerton Fire Department. In our daily interactions with members of our community we see families, and particularly children, impacted by lack of food, shelter, and clothing. Ensuring children have a warm jacket is one small way we can give back. We have been doing this program for about the last ten years, and hope to keep it going for many years to come."
Thank you firefighters!
