A Message From Superintendent McClay

Dear TVUSD Families:

As we approach this Thanksgiving holiday, I want to thank you for your continued support throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. While the 2020-2021 school year has been nothing like any other year in the history of public education, we in TVUSD are particularly thankful for our administrators, teachers, support staff, families, and community.

As you know, these past nine months have required a complete re-invention of our organization’s way of operating. From teaching and learning to supporting, planning, and communicating, everything has been revamped. And unfortunately, much of it has been re-vamped again and again, as we have needed to respond to ever-changing dynamics, guidance, and mandates.

We realize the toll this school year has taken on our families and thank you for your continued flexibility, encouragement, and involvement! Your role in supporting your child’s education has never been more needed or important, and the sacrifices everyone has made to ensure our students’ success has not gone unnoticed. The TVUSD community, like always, has risen to the occasion and moved mountains to make the best of a global pandemic. Thank you for playing such a critical role.

While we had hoped to have good news about being able to offer an in-person model shortly after the holidays, the trending and metrics for our County still do not look good. In fact, they are worsening. Please know that we are monitoring the indicators daily and will be ready to offer in-person instruction as soon as we are permitted to do so.

We continue to focus efforts on expanding our legally authorized on-campus learning hubs for certain populations of students, including special education, foster youth, homeless, and English learners. Please be assured that we are committed to continuing to do everything within our power and authority to provide for all students' educational needs.

Riverside County Color Status and Reopening Plans

Riverside County remains in the most restrictive purple tier. This means that we cannot legally open schools for in-person instruction until our county moves back to the red tier. We continue to plan and move forward for Prek-12 grades with preparing school campuses for a return to in-person hybrid instruction models within the red tier in January 2021. Any return is contingent upon Riverside County's status, however, we want our campuses, protocols, and processes to be established and ready.

Elementary School Waiver

TVUSD has submitted the waiver for Tk-5 grades to operate within the purple tier. However, the county cannot act on the application until trends improve. Our application has been received and is on file. It can be considered once the county is allowed by the state to return to approving waivers.

We continue to update the Reopening Plan as new information becomes available.
