A Message From Principal Persad, Week of July 21st 2020
July Update No. 2
Dear TYWLS Students and Families,
We hope you are enjoying the sunshine and are safe and well!
We know that the one thing on everyone's mind is re-opening 2020. We also know that with that brings a slew of questions, wonderings and concerns about safety and schedules and what exactly teaching and learning will look like in September.
In an effort to meet our 3C approach (Care, Communication, Clarity) during uncertain times, we want to give an opportunity to hear your VOICE about school models for the Fall and to capture as best as we can any questions you may have at this time.
At this point with the CDC, Governor, Mayoral and UFT information on re-opening, we are planning as we always do (with what's best for students and staff) as we await further guidance. That means with a regular schedule (as though we are in the building) and with a schedule that allows us to be all virtual or hybrid as necessary as well as a schedule that would allow for ease of re-entry should we be fortunate enough to go back to things as "normal."
Anything is possible, and we will be ready for all scenarios. We have an amazing team, and as with all things, we will get through this next chapter too.
Voting matters! Register if you haven't yet! And be sure to vote in all local elections as well!
Our TOWN HALL will be STREAMED live (and taped) on Monday July 27th from 1:00-1:45pm. This event will not be interactive (due to internet safety concerns with LIVE events at large scale) Your opportunity to voice questions and make suggestions are through this FORM.
During the town hall, we will review model choices, PROS and CONS and answer questions you submit through this form. Please note, many of your questions will not yet have answers (as they are reliant upon the NYS Governor, NYC Mayor, NYC Chancellor's Office).
The goal of the town hall is to respond and capture your suggestions as best as we are able to, at this time and aim for comfort in a space without "closure".
We look forward to hearing from you!
Principal Persad, AP Cohen and our School Re-Opening Team
School Re-Opening Updates!
*We will host a FAMILY/Student TOWN HALL LIVE Stream Event virtually and share model options, and respond to your questions from the Google form.
Monday, July 27th 2020 1pm -1:45pm. (LINK BELOW)
*Families have a VERY important survey ---to determine if they PLAN to keep their child in virtual learning in September OR if they would rather send her to school. The survey is linked here.
You may decide to attend or VIEW the TOWN HALL on Monday FIRST, and then complete the survey. If you are ALREADY certain of your plans for September, you may opt to complete now.
Families have through AUGUST 7th to complete this survey. Please read carefully.
Do note, families will have structured dates during the school year to OPT back in or OUT of virtual learning/in school learning.
*All guidance on re-opening will come directly from our Chancellor and Mayor. All information is always "tentative" and will depend on the guidance from CDC, health officials, etc. With all changes, we will update you as we learn more!
Official Family Survey on School Re-Opening (Preliminary Information)
School Year 2020-2021
This fall, your child’s school will offer a combination of in-person and remote learning. You can choose from two options:
1. 100% Remote Learning: Opt in to have your child learn 100% remotely (all online, from home). To choose this option for your child, fill out and submit this form. If you are having difficulties completing this form online, call 311.
OR
2. Combination of In-Person and Remote Learning: Your child can follow their school’s schedule, a mix of in-person days at school and remote learning days from home. To choose this option, no action is needed: your school will be in touch about its schedule and programming plans in the coming weeks. Please visit the Return to School 2020 pages on the website for more information.
Changing Preferences
- If you chose 100% Remote Learning but want to change your child’s preference back to Blended Learning, complete this form again by August 7.
- After August 7, any family who chose 100% Remote Learning will have the option to change back to Blended Learning at a few specific times during the school year.
This form does not apply to charter schools. If your child attends a charter school, please reach out to the school directly to discuss remote learning options.
