Week Three: What does SEL look like in the classroom and personal practice?

As stated by CASEL, "SEL in the classroom takes shape in a variety of ways. It is promoted through explicit instruction, often using an evidence-based program, and should also be integrated across classroom instruction and academic curriculum. SEL plays an important role in classroom climate—for example, how teachers build relationships with students, how students build relationships with each other, and how conflict and discipline are addressed."

It is also important to cultivate a community of adults who intentionally grow their own social and emotional skills and capacities so that they can model for students what it looks like in practice.

SEL in the Classroom Self-Assessment
Use this self-assessment three to four times over the course of the year to assess your strengths and areas to develop as you promote SEL through explicit instruction, integration into academic instruction, and a supportive classroom climate.

Strengthen Adult SEL

Effective schoolwide SEL implementation relies on adults who examine their own social and emotional competence, collaborate with peers to practice new SEL strategies, and develop skills for cultivating supportive, equitable learning environments. Ongoing, high-quality professional learning can support all staff in these endeavors. Check out the resources from CASEL.

Harvard's Implicit Bias Test

Project Implicit is a non-profit organization and international collaboration between researchers who are interested in implicit social cognition - thoughts and feelings outside of conscious awareness and control. The goal of the organization is to educate the public about hidden biases and to provide a “virtual laboratory” for collecting data on the Internet.
