A Message from GQES Administration:
Week 15: 11/13/23-11/17/23
Chameleons RISE: Raising Intentionality Strengthening Expectations for students, teachers, administration, and families.
Dear GQES Families,
Thank you for sending your child to us every day, on time, and ready to learn! Please help your child's class achieve the best attendance for their grade level. We honor classrooms every few 2-3 weeks per grade level. We now have Punctual Pete, a scorecard for students, from our school division, where they track their ON-TIME and READY TO LEARN progress every day. When students are habitually tardy, this interrupts their learning, so please help get your child to school on time.
We also have the Golden Spoon award, where classrooms can earn recognition for following processes and routines in our cafeteria daily and weekly. We want students to have good manners, clean up after themselves, and line up on time when lunch is over. These are not difficult expectations; however, we appreciate your help in reinforcing these cafeteria expectations.
The weather is getting cooler. Make sure you dress your child appropriately for the weather. There are no bad weather days; instead, we sometimes fail to dress correctly for the weather. If you need help with coats or gloves or hats, please contact our main office at 540-662-3575 and/or email our school counselors:
- Ms Sara Shoemaker, email: (shoemaker@wps.k12.va.us) full time counselor at our school
- Ms. Karen King, email: (kingk@wps.k12.va.us) part time counselor at our school
Our students have been on field trips and are learning about our wonderful community (trips to the Discovery Museum, the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, and various farms around Winchester). These are excellent learning opportunities. When our GQES Chameleons travel for a field trip, we expect excellent behavior from our students as we are guests at these venues. Thank you for helping teach your child our discipline plan at GQES:
- Always, always support your child's positive behavior by encouraging your child to show our expectations at GQES: smiling faces, listening ears, helping hands, respecting boundaries and trying our best on all learning tasks

We are grateful for our Mentorship Program with Fellowship Bible Church. They have given us the best tray tables, so students can enjoy time with their mentors throughout our school. Shout out to Pastor Scott Santmier for helping us with this great program!
We know students need help with behaviors at times. We want to work with your child and with you to help your child thrive at GQES. A child gains proficiency and growth when they come to school every day, on time, are ready to learn, and do their best, even when the learning may be hard! Persistence pays off!!!
More information:
- Please always update your child's emergency contacts, addresses, custody and/or phone numbers as changes may arise.
If you have questions or concerns, always feel free to contact us at 540-662-3575. Thank you for partnering with us to help your child thrive!
Sincerely,
Joanie Hovatter

Teachers learn too!
We had an excellent presentation on the importance of teaching young students to write from Dr. Mary Tedrow last week! Here Dr. Daraban and Ms. Williamson are writing and sharing their books!!
Ms. Yelena Edwards, our Kdgn TA and Ms. Nicholson, elementary Math supervisor seeing how little ones learn Math!
We enjoy seeing students know the difference between more and less in their mathematical thinking!
Thankful for Ms. Mariela Formiconi's visit!
We welcome newcomers to our school! Ms. Mariela Formiconi is a great resource as she has done this for 30 years as an ELL teacher, part of the newcomer program at Harrisonburg City Schools, and now a consultant and professor at Bridgewater College! She is a great help to us at GQES!
Dr. Mary Tedrow, a great teacher of teachers!
We learned so much on Election Day in the short time we had with Dr. Tedrow on the value of increasing students' output through low-risk writing! Excellent work!!!
