Final reminder: last chance to complete the STAR MAT parental survey through this link https://bit.ly/STARSURVEY22
With so much in the news about the cost of living and now energy prices going up, you can check whether your child could be eligible for a free school meal, whatever school year they are in. All the information is on the NYCC website at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/free-school-meals
Finally, we always ask that you park safely and with consideration for others: please be aware that traffic enforcement officers have been around school this week. There have also been some concerns raised over road safety: even with the Highway Code changes, please encourage your child to cross the roads safely either with Mr Thomas or at the pedestrian crossings.
Thank you for your continued support.

Our school values
Nursery - Stars
The children have really embraced learning about the Chinese New Year this week. We have read the Chinese New Year story and found out through books and the internet about how they prepare and celebrate the New Year. The children have enjoyed mark making in the red sand and writing Chinese numbers, exploring rice and noodles in sensory play, having a go at our own dragon dance and lots of Chinese New Year crafts. They have also tasted some Chinese food. In phonics we have started to look at initial sounds in words. In maths we have practised counting not only objects but actions and have been learning about the word less in maths.
Star of the week: Jude Cooper
FS - Moon and Mercury
It’s been a tale of two halves this week in reception. At the beginning of the week we read the story ‘Owl Babies’ written by Martin Waddell and the children produced some amazing writing thinking about a time when they have been brave. We have also discussed what is meant by the term ‘nocturnal’ and found out which animals were nocturnal and which were not. We also found out that some of us might be classed as nocturnal as we get out of bed a few times in the night.
On Thursday we celebrated Chinese New Year accompanied by our special school lunch. We listened to the story of the Zodiac and loved the animal race. We learnt that this year it was the year of the Tiger and we found out how children in China celebrated Chinese New Year. We then used our creative skills to make dragons as well as making lucky Chinese envelopes and drawing tigers.

Y1 - Galaxy and Venus
We have continued our tour of the United Kingdom this week, exploring Scotland and its capital city. We have studied its geographical features, and immersed ourselves in Scottish traditions, cultures and food. In History, we have investigated the early life of Queen Elizabeth the II, studying The Queen’s Hat and The Queen’s Handbag by Steve Antony in English, creating story predictions and diary entries in our writing. In maths, we have begun our study of measures, comparing and ordering a range of lengths and heights and in art we have recreated the work of Scottish artist, Stephen Brown.

Year 2 / 3 Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune
We have continued learning about the Romans this week, with a focus on the Roman army. In English, the children have planned and written a detailed diary entry using powerful, descriptive language to share their experiences, thoughts and feelings about the gruelling daily routine of being a Roman soldier. In Maths, the children have recapped/learnt how to divide numbers using the techniques of sharing and grouping, both practically and pictorially, and have learnt about the relationship between multiplication and division (inverse). In DT, the children have carried on with designing and preparing the key components of a Roman soldier’s helmet, ready to construct and decorate next week. In RE, we have designed an information sheet about Muslim prayer and in French we have practised writing the words for numbers 1 to 10.

Year 4 Mars and Earth
It’s been a very exploratory week in Year 4 this week. On Tuesday, we learned about the Chinese new year in guided reading before going on to make our own decorations to celebrate the year of the tiger. They looked great! In Maths, we have started our new unit of learning about fractions and exploring equivalent fractions practically and by noticing patterns. In Science, we have done plenty of exploring, in our latest unit of learning, sound. We have been looking at how different groups of instruments make sound through vibration.

Earth - Thomas Rowley
Year 5 Asteroid and Pluto
This week Year 5 have been mastering the fine art of typing by publishing our amazing Porsche stories, complete with a picture and fancy fonts. Look out for a copy coming home next week! We are now preparing to write a report about our failed mission to Mars, by gathering as much information as we can about the Red Planet and learning the definitions of many strange space words.
In Maths we have continued our exploration of fractions, by revisiting equivalents and how we can work these out without pictures to help. We then moved on to comparing and ordering fractions, which was tricky, as always in Year 5, having a solid times table knowledge makes this slightly easier. Year 5 have shown great resilience and perseverance in this tricky topic, well done everyone!
In art, we have been shaping our planets for our models and ensuring that they are the correct sizes in relation to each other. There has been lots of problem solving conversations and teamwork as the groups try to add the rings of Saturn. I can’t wait to see the finished result!

Year 6 Nebular and Constellation
This week in year 6 has been a blur! The amount of work we have completed has been fantastic. In maths we have understood the link between percentages and pie charts in our statistic sessions. We have covered all things circular in our geometry sessions, and finished the week learning how to calculate the mean, in preparation for next week’s mode, median and range lessons. In English, we have begun our new topic, linked to the amazing discovery, made by Howard Carter in 1922. Read all about it in our newspapers that detail the excavation of Tutenkhamun’s tomb. We have covered the very many different types of past tense and also how to use verbs and adjectives to give emotive responses from readers. In topic, we have learned all about the different features of the River Nile, from flood plains to the delta. Well done year 6 - keep those hive points going!
