2023-24 LOHS Calendar

Even though all meals are free for the 2023-24 school year, there are other education benefits provided to the district, individual school building, or household that require an individual student benefit (free, reduced, paid) to be determined each year.

We’re asking every family to complete and submit either the School Meal Application or Education Benefits Form (formerly the Household Information Report.) The information collected is used to provide additional services and benefits beyond school meals, like resources for classrooms, teachers, and children, guidance and college counselors, and health and wellness services. Summer EBT benefits are also available for eligible households. Families can apply at lakeorion.familyportal.cloud.

Lake Orion has adopted new attendance codes this year to help clarify a student's absence.

• If a student is absent from a class or the school day, the automatic code that is entered is a UA (unexcused absence).
• If a parent calls their student in because they are ill, or have something going on that is not school related, the code entered is RA (reported absence).
• If a parent chooses to send in a doctor's note, funeral card, or any type of written documentation regarding the student's absence, the code is entered as EA (excused absence).
• Students who attend a school related activity will have a code entered of SA (student activity).
• If you happen to see a B (building) as an attendance code, this simply means the student was not in class, but meeting with an administrator, counselor, in a meeting/school assembly, etc.

Students who have 10 or more unexcused absences will automatically trigger the truancy process.

If a student is considering taking an AP Exam for a course they are currently enrolled in, the deadline to register is Sunday, November 12th.

Please note, the 2024 AP Exams will be administered over two weeks in May: May 6–10 and May 13–17. The AP Exam Schedule can be found on the College Board site for student planning.

Did you know that high school students can earn college credits as early as 10th grade? Join us on November 13th in the Commons to learn about the various opportunities we have for our students. This is open to our current 8th thru 11th grade students.

The North Oakland Community Coalition is working in partnership with Lake Orion Community Schools to present "Vaping 101." This Parent University training, taking place on November 15th from 6:30-8 p.m., provides the space to discuss all things related to vaping.

Any 10th grade students interested in attending OSTC NE their junior year should consider attending the OSTC Showcase Field Trip on November 16th. This opportunity will allow our students to visit all the programs the tech center has to offer, as well as learn about the Early Middle College option.

Students can pick up their field trip permission slip from the counseling office. Signed slips are due by the end of this week.

Troupe 2898 is proud to present Clue, a farce that follows a dinner party for six strangers who are connected by some mysterious circumstances. The party quickly goes awry, and the partygoers must determine whodunnit before they find themselves the killer’s new victim. Content Warnings: Clue contains flashing lights, atmospheric effects (i.e. haze and fog), comedic violence, fake blood, and some mature themes.

Clue is written by Sandy Rustin and based on the screenplay by Jonathan Lynn. It is produced with special arrangements by Playscripts, Inc.

Lake Orion Community Schools is offering Winter Guard for students in Grades 5-12 with the upcoming informational meeting on Tuesday, November 7 in the Lake Orion High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. That will be followed by the auditions Monday, November 13 and Wednesday November 15, both at 8 p.m. at Waldon Middle School.

Winter guard is the indoor version of color guard. It uses dance, flags, sabers, rifles, and other pieces of equipment to tell a story, all set to a soundtrack. Any student can participate in winter guard; no experience is necessary. It's the perfect activity for anybody who loves to dance and perform. The season runs from November to April with weekly rehearsals and weekend competitions.

Lake Orion High School has partnered with Exchange Mate International and is seeking host families to host a semester student. Student would arrive the weekend of January 19th to start 2nd semester on January 24th. Student would depart the week of June 10th. There is a $600 monthly stipend that host family would receive to offset the cost of hosting. Students come with their own cell phone and health insurance and are responsible for their own personal expenses.

There are 2 students seeking host families: 11th grade boy from Italy interested in golf, tennis, running and skiing. He loves pizza and pasta. 12th grade boy from Brazil interested in soccer, working out and swimming.

Lake Orion Community Schools has a Board of Education policy that prohibits anyone from operating a drone on district property/over a district facility at any time unless the flight plan is approved by the Superintendent. Those operating the drone must also be FAA-certified. That includes athletic events, which are governed by the MHSAA, which also prohibits their usage.

If any individual – staff, student or community member – would like to operate a drone on LOCS property, please email the request to LOCS Director of Communications Mark Snyder at mark.snyder@lok12.org.

Students who choose to DoorDash, GrubHub or have food deliveries to the high school may NOT retrieve their order until their scheduled lunch period on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday as to not disrupt their class environment.

Wednesdays we will not allow food deliveries to the building during the school day. Students coming from OSTC MUST PLAN ACCORDINGLY, especially on Homeroom days.

Please note, all students receive a free breakfast and lunch through food services. On Wednesdays breakfast is served and the snack bar and school store are both open.

The Lake Orion High School Scholarship page is up and running!

Lake Orion Community Schools will have two millage proposals on the February/March presidential primary ballot, each designed to maintain the current tax levies. One will be for the 10-year operational millage, which the state of Michigan requires every public school district to pass to receive full foundation allowance for each student. The second proposal is to replace the 10-year sinking fund, which pays for infrastructure repairs (parking lots, HVAC, computers, etc.) throughout the district. Information about the millage proposals, including Frequently Asked Questions, is located on the School Election Information page.
