Monarch Butterfly Presentation
Lynne Campbell, Education Extension Specialist from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, made a special visit to CR-5th graders on Friday. Our students are taking part in a Monarch raising project, but the caterpillars perished due to a disease. Students were disappointed but Lynne surprised them with 4 chrysalides and 4 big, fat, healthy monarch caterpillars. She presented on the monarch habitat and diet. Students learned about different types of milkweed and how to do the caterpillar dance! Mrs. Stannard took the caterpillars and chrysalides home for the weekend and is watching them closely. They are close to emerging! Stay tuned!
Monarch Butterfly Release
Clayton Ridge 5th Graders had 2 butterflies emerge last week. It was so exciting! The weather was perfect to release them on Friday. Sunny, above 60 degrees, and not raining! Students learned about good places to release, how to hold a butterfly safely-making sure not to touch the scales, and how to tag them. I am sure we will have more that emerged over the weekend that we can tag and release this week!

"STEAM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators." -Engineering for Kids
CREL 5th graders LOVE STEAM! Today they made Lava Lamps and Chia Pets. They learned about the density of different liquids and the germination of grass seed to make their very own pet!
Students also watched videos and their teachers to learn to draw superheroes and more. They learned how to make paper flowers, which never die! Several students gifted their creations to Mr. Wahls in honor of his birthday on Saturday. They had a great time decorating his office!
¿Qué Estás Leyendo?
Students in Mrs. Cano’s Spanish 3 and 4 classes are reading authentic Spanish books to help broaden their Spanish! Once a week, they spend at least 10 minutes reading to help gain fluency in the Spanish language.
Clayton Ridge Elementary EAGLES+ News
Ms. Karen Geuder
The EAGLES+ students in Ms. Geuder’s classes have been very busy since school started in August. The first week of school we took Learning Style Inventories and Multiple Intelligence tests so Ms. Geuder could learn about the ways we learn best.
Then we did some STEM activities. The students had fun making pencil towers. They discovered that regular pencils work better than round pencils when you are using pencils to build with. The round pencils often rolled away.
The students also did a Paper Chain Stem Challenge. They got 12 inches of tape, two long pieces of construction paper, and scissors to use. They could not use anything else. At first, some groups thought that the smaller they made the links the longer their chains would be. Then some thought the bigger they made their links the longer the chain would be. They were correct. The students in 5th grade also cut their tape into the smallest pieces possible to hold the links together. The students that made the longest chain were excited.
The students also enjoyed using the Mini Spheros from Keystone. They completed many challenges using the Spheros. We wish we had some of our own. They are fun to use and challenging at the same time. Some of the students have added these to their birthday and Christmas lists.
The students are also using the EAGLES+ new iPads. We have 10 new iPads we can use in class now when we are doing Robotics, Coding, Brain Challenges, writing projects, etc. They have enough memory and work with everything we will be doing this year.
