NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
26 August 2021
This Saturday our Confirmation candidates will receive the Sacrament from Bishop Don Sproxton. It is such a special time for them as they are accepted into the Church as young adults who take on a much more significant role in their Faith development. Prior to receiving this Sacrament, the onus was on parents to foster and nurture their child’s Spiritual journey but now, whilst the parents still play a very special part in this, the students are expected to accept this responsibility. A number of the students have expressed to me just how excited the are to be taking this step as are we at Notre Dame school and parish. Please remember these students, their parents and their teachers in your prayers.
PERFORMING ARTS
Over the past week we have had significant representation in the Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools. This year the Festival has 16,900 students from 99 Catholic school from across Western Australia performing at 16 different venues. In last week’s Newsletter I told you about the excellent performance presented by our Year Three classes in the Liturgical singing section of the Festival and this week I had the very great pleasure of watching our two Dance troupes and our school Choir perform. Their performances were all of a very high standard and below I have listed some of the Adjudicators’ very positive comments. Congratulations to all of the children involved and to the staff who spent significant time in preparing them so well.
Year Two Dance – Superheroes of Notre Dame
What an absolute delight & achievement from all 24 Year Twos!!! They filled the stage with such an awareness of spacing. The movement was creative and very enjoyable to watch.
Massive Congratulations!
Year 3-6 Dance – Eat Healthy, Move Your Body – Let’s Dance!
A brilliantly appropriate theme that was an absolute visual feast, from start to finish. All performers showed skills in musicality and theatrical expressions.
Such a pleasure to watch. Thank You!
Notre Dame Primary School Choir
This beautiful song was performed with a strong sound tone. Congratulations on an enjoyable performance.
What an absolute treat we experienced at the Night of the Notables presentation yesterday afternoon. The confidence of the children and the detail of their research was exceptional, and I was so proud, as were the parents, to see such professional presentations. Congratulations to everyone, children, parents and staff who ensure that the children were so well prepared and set up for success.
The second half of Mr Seers’ Year 5P class will deliver their presentations this afternoon and I am sure they will perform at a similarly high level.
JUNIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
I know all of the children are excited about their Carnival tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing lots of great competition and children competing their best to help their Faction earn points towards the trophy. Whilst only one Faction will be the winners of the trophy, we can all be winners if we try our best and have fun while we’re doing that.
I wish all children and factions the very best for the Carnival and hope to see many parents during the events.
FATHERS’ DAY
I’m looking forward to meeting with many of the dads at our Mass and breakfast next Wednesday, 1 September. Breakfast is in the Mother Mary Piazza from 7.30am and Mass is in the Church commencing at 8.45am.

YR 2 CLASS NEWS
What a fun term we have had so far. We have been very busy practising for our athletics carnival on Friday, making sure we have learnt all the team games. We have also been taking part in EduDance lessons. We have been working on our dance moves and can’t wait to showcase them later this term!
Religion
In Religious Education lessons we have been learning about the sacrament of Baptism. We know that Baptism is the first of the seven Sacraments and it is when we become part of God’s special family. We have also been learning about the different symbols that represent Baptism.
When people get baptised they become a part of the Catholic family. (Aria)
Baptism is when the priest pours holy water over a baby’s head and they become part of God’s family. (Zoey)
The Baptismal Font is used for baptising babies and other people who want to be a part of the church. (Inuk)
During Baptism the priest holds the baby over the baptismal font. (Summer)
NAIDOC Week
During week four we celebrated NAIDOC Week. We explored the important connection the Aboriginal people have to the land. We wrote a class prayer to place in the special prayer book our school created and listened to Dreamtime stories. We looked at the various symbols within Aboriginal art and used them in our own drawings. We also looked at the Aboriginal flag and the meaning behind the colours in the flag.
I like learning about and drawing the Aboriginal symbols. (Hailey)
We have NAIDOC Week to celebrate Aboriginal culture. (Eloise)
NAIDOC Week used to be only a one-day celebration and now it is a week-long celebration. (Hugh)
HASS and Art:
We have been exploring our connection to community and looking at the various states and cities within Australia. We created maps of Australia and learnt about famous landmarks that we have throughout our country. We have been drawing portraits of some of these landscapes in art.
I have enjoyed learning about Australia. I liked drawing the landmark. I drew the Great Barrier Reef and coloured it with oil pastels to try and make it look like the real reef. (Emily)
Australia has two territories and six states. There are famous landmarks and great places to visit in Australia. (Ishaan)

Year 2 DANCE - CATHOLIC PERFORMING ARTS
The children have been working extremely hard for the past two terms on their superhero performance. Last Friday night all their hard work was put to the big stage. The children got to perform at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in front of a huge crowd, that absolutely loved there performance. It’s safe to say on the evening of performing the children did not disappoint. They danced with incredible energy, beaming smiles and filled the stage with such joy. I am super proud of them and all they achieved. It will be a memory that I am sure will stay with them forever.
A big thank you to all the parents and teachers who assisted me with the dance group on the night and at rehearsals, I couldn’t have done without you all.
Miss Rognetta
SENIOR DANCE GROUP Yrs 3-6
Congratulations to all the senior dancers who performed at the Performing Arts last Friday 20 August. What a performance! Their genuine enthusiasm shone through on the stage. The dancers received a fabulous report. They really did themselves proud.
The rehearsal was an experience that was very new, as many of the children had never even been on a stage so big. We only had fifteen minutes to rehearse and there were a few hurdles to sort out due to unexpected changes required for the night. This was the moment I realised the children really were ready to shine! Although a new experience, they took advice and all were positive to take on the changes required.
During the night, I was very impressed backstage, to see the children were absolutely giving it their all! Within the report the adjudicators noted that the children’s performance showed: ‘The Wow Factor was there!’ They said it was ‘an absolute visual feast from start to finish’.
The final comment from the adjudicators said it all: ‘the enjoyment shown on every dancer on stage was such a pleasure to watch!’
I would like to say a special thank you to all the wonderful helpers.
Thank you to the fantastic sewers:
- Chrissy: designing the concept for the costumes then sewing, fitting and tacking them in on the night.
- Mei: sewing costumes and keeping us in line with fittings, storage, shopping and the crazy fun of it all! Not to mention always keeping me calm when any hurdles arose.
- Renee Ciccarone: sewing and fitting costumes.
- Petra Harries: sewing and fitting costumes.
Thank you to the prop designers:
- Kathy Sheehan: designing the props: I think the audience were ready to eat all the lollies, candies and donuts.
- Paul Caridi: helping to make the dumb-bells.
Thank you to the backstage helpers who transformed our children ready for the performance:
- Chrissy
- Mei
- Sue-Ellen Gullotti
- Erin Horne
- Erin Tan
Thank you to all parents for having your children at their classes, dress fittings and rehearsals.
Thank you to Chrissy and Kathy for assisting us throughout the day to help us prepare for the night. Chrissy also was our lighting advisor on the day and truly helped create an effect that allowed the children and the costumes she designed to glow.
Thank you to the teachers who came to watch the children perform.
The team now look forward to performing at the festival in Week Nine and the school assembly in Week Ten.
Mrs Tiffany Donovan-Flintoff

Dr Kristy Goodwin isn't here to promote complete digital abstinence (she knows it's unrealistic) but she does recommend avoiding screens at certain times of the day or implementing a screen swap (moving from a smartphone to a tv for e.g.) if you're going to use a screen before school.
