Welcome!

Welcome to the first issue of The Board Bulletin. The Bulletin will be published monthly on the Thursday following the voting meeting of the Board. The Bulletin is designed for informational purposes to keep the West York Area School District Community abreast of Board happenings and is not intended as an official record of meetings. To view official meeting minutes, please visit BoardDocs and click on the specific meetings of interest. Each meeting's minutes are presented to the Board for approval at the following meeting. Board Meeting Highlights

Tuesday, August 15, 2023, Board Voting Meeting

  • The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM by President Lynn Kohler.

  • The minutes from the August 8, 2023, Work Session of the Board were approved.

  • Dr. Davies mentioned that the District Welcome was held on Monday, August 14th, to welcome all faculty and staff to the 2023-24 school year.

  • School Directors Lynn Kohler, Jeanne Herman, and Todd Gettys received certificates of recognition from PSBA for their 8, 12, and 16 years of service, respectively.

  • Action was taken on several items, including:

    • LIU 12 Professional Development Agreement

    • LIU 12 Language Instruction Education Program Agreement

    • District Calendar Update

      • The calendar was updated to include PIAA practice start dates for fall, winter, and spring sports.

    • 2023-24 Bus Driver Recommendations

    • 2023-24 Insurance Renewal Package

    • 2023-24 Student Transportation

    • Donation of Jazz Band Risers

    • Donation from the Foundation for the WYASD

    • Middle School Improvement Plan

    • Monthly Financial Statements

    • Personnel, including:

      • New Hires - Several new teachers and administrators were introduced.

      • Retirements and Resignations

      • Volunteers

      • Salary Column Movements

  • A Board Resolution in Support of House Bill 132 - Charter School Funding Reform was presented to the Board for Action. The Board voted to table the item until more information about the Bill is available.

  • President Kohler adjourned the meeting at 6:58 PM.

Work Session Highlights

Tuesday, August 8, 2023, Work Session of the Board

  • The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by President Lynn Kohler.

    • President Kohler announced that an Executive Session was held prior to the meeting to discuss personnel and legal matters.

  • President Kohler called for a moment of reflection in memory of Middle School Aide, Jen Bergels, who passed away in July.

  • President Kohler also asked that everyone keep teachers and students in their thoughts as they return to school.

  • The minutes from the June 20, 2023, Work Session of the Board were approved by the Board.

  • Mr. Brandon Fuhrman, Athletic Director, shared a video and presentation about fall sports.

  • Discussion was held regarding the following items:

    • Agreements

      • LIU 12 Professional Development Agreement

      • LIU 12 Language Instruction Education Program Agreement

    • District Calendar Update

      • The calendar will be updated to include PIAA practice start dates for fall, winter, and spring sports.

    • 2023-24 Bus Driver Recommendations

    • 2023-24 Insurance Renewal Package

      • This is the annual renewal of various types of insurance the District carries to include property, equipment, liability, auto, worker’s compensation, etc.

    • 2023-24 Student Transportation

      • This item allows the District to transport students for the school year

    • Donation

      • A donation is being offered to the music department of jazz band risers from a West York parent

    • House Bill 132 - Charter School Resolution

    • Other Matters for Discussion

      • Free Breakfast for the 2023-24 school year

      • District Welcome for all faculty and staff on Monday, August 14th

      • Chain of Communication

        • This document provides a “road map” for families and community members to the appropriate person/department to contact with questions or concerns and can be found on the District website.

    • Personnel Recommendations

      • Recommendations include new hires, resignations, retirements, volunteers, etc.

    • Proposed Staffing Recommendations for the 2023-24 school year

      • Ms. Marlena Lang, Human Resources Director, shared information about a plan for substitute coverage during the school year.
