The Board of Education Wants to Hear From You!
As part of the District's new strategic plan, Community Engagement and Communication is one of the priority areas. The Board has launched a monthly ThoughtExchange during each board meeting to ask stakeholders to share their thoughts on a given topic. The Board will review the results during their monthly Board study sessions to help guide the planning and the work of the District with your voice at the table. This month the topic is on Community & Student Voice. This will help gather input on how the District can best hear from you.
Please take the time to share your thoughts on ThoughtExchange on this month's topics:
The following items were shared with the Board of Education for information. Please see the listed agenda items below.
- MSBA Board Report - The Board watched the monthly video update from Missouri School Boards Association.
- ThoughtExchange Survey Results from the November Board Meeting:
- During the November 9 Board meeting, the following questions were asked: What are some suggestions for addressing your safety concerns at school?
- 281 participants generated 292 thoughts and gave 9,632 star ratings
- Breakdown of survey participation:
- 7% (19) student responses
- 72% (191) staff member responses
- 17% (45) parent/guardian/grandparent/caregiver responses
- 4% (11) other stakeholder responses
- Many of the top thoughts focused on the following:
- More or harsher OSS consequences for students who say/threaten others
- More clear boundaries and consequences when boundaries are not followed
- Students lack of respect for authority, which in turn causes safety problems
- Students who have exhibited violent or threatening behavior should not be allowed to return to the larger school setting
The complete list of thoughts shared in the exchange has been shared with District and building administration leadership teams. Many of the concerns are being addressed with action steps that include:
- Reviewing safety concerns and making adjustments
- Student Expectation Code Committee -- that includes teachers, District leaders, school leaders and members from the Board-- meeting regularly regarding revisions to the SEC
- In the process of holding focus groups -- that will include other teachers at-large, parents, and students -- to review revisions to the SEC
- Reviewing revisions for safety and discipline consistency across all schools in the District
- Revisions will be presented to the Board after the first of the year
- McCluer Success Plan Update
