Hopkins Middle School Newsletter
August 25, 2022
Dear Students and Parents,
Today was a great first day of school!
Students are well on their way to mastering lockers and schedules. Teachers spent the day introducing themselves and their expectations.
Our hope is that your student left today with a feeling of accomplishment and excitement for a great school year. There sure was a buzz of positive energy in the hallways!
While there may not be much homework tonight, please take a few minutes to ask your son or daughter about their day. Ask to see the class syllabus for each teacher. This will have information about how your student will be graded and classroom behavior expectations.
Begin planning a routine for your student when there is work to be done at home. Is there a quiet place to work away from screens? Will homework time be right when they get home or sometime after dinner? Is there one day a week you will ask your student to show you their grades? Planning ahead of time and sticking to a routine is going to make a huge positive impact.
Finally, I’d like to encourage communication to be a two-way street this year. We will do our best to post a weekly email, provide updates via Facebook, and allow for access to the same scrolling announcements the students see in the hallways on our website. If you ever have questions about what goes on in the classroom, please reach out to the classroom teacher. They will be the best source of information for anything to do with grades or potential behavior issues in class.
Thank you for your support of our school. Together we will make this the best year ever!
Sincerely,
Scott Stockwell
HMS Principal

Dear Parent/Guardian:
We would like to offer your student the opportunity to participate in a program at Hopkins Middle
School called “Hand2Hand”. This program helps provide a student with food for the weekends and is
intended for families who currently may be experiencing a financial burden. The first backpack is set to be delivered on September 16, 2022.
Here’s how Hand2Hand will work: At the end of the week students who are signed up for the program will receive a minimum of 10 food items in a black school logo drawstring bag that will be provided at the first week of participation. These food items will be a combination of breakfast, snacks, lunch and/or dinner items. While the food items are meant for the student, they can be shared among the family as well. (Please note: if your student or another family member has food allergies it will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to check the contents of the backpack each week to ensure the food doesn’t contain ingredients which could cause an allergic reaction).
There is no cost to participate! If you sign your student up to receive Hand2Hand, they will continue to receive the weekly bags each week they are at Hopkins Middle School. However, if down the road you no longer need the assistance, simply write a note expressing your desire to discontinue receiving Hand2Hand bags and give this note to the school office. This opportunity is being provided by LifeChange Community Church. To learn more about Hand2Hand, please visit their website:
If you feel your student would benefit from this opportunity, please complete the response form at
the bottom of this letter and return it to your student’s teacher by September 9, 2022 and we will
make sure that your student’s name is then added to the list. Your response will be kept confidential.
Sincerely,
Scott Stockwell

Families of Hopkins Public Schools:
Beginning with the first day of school for the 2022-23 school year, school meals will no longer be free to all students. Congress did NOT pass the waivers to continue free meals to all students. We will go back to applications to determine free and reduced meal eligibility. Those applications will be available after July 1st. We strongly encourage all families to fill out the applications on-line to ease the process, information will be in your back to school packet.
