CDW Weekly Wrap-Up

On Monday, March 6th, we are reaching the mid-point of Marking Period 3. Interim Reports will be available on Wednesday, March 8th. It is amazing how fast this year is going! You can help your child(ren) succeed by having regular conversations with him/her about his/her classes.

1. Consistently check your child(ren)'s Genesis gradebook and discuss missing assignments.

2. Identify any teachers with whom he/she needs to speak about his/her progress.

3. Acknowledge classes which are going well and develop a strategy/plan for any needed improvement.

4. Discuss where your child can receive additional supports. Are they attending teacher extra help sessions? Are they asking questions in class?

5. Continue to monitor progress and provide feedback throughout the remainder of the marking period and school year.

This year, the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) will be administered to all Grade 5 students on Tuesday, March 21st and to all Grade 6 students on Wednesday, March 22nd.

The OLSAT assessment is designed to measure a student's cognitive ability, as it relates to abstract thinking and reasoning ability; however, it does not produce an IQ score. Although the data from the OLSAT will not be used for grading purposes, the results help to identify students who qualify for LEAP, our gifted and talented program, while also providing teachers with additional data points regarding student ability and performance.

If your child becomes eligible for the LEAP Program, the school will contact you at the end of August. Your child's OLSAT scores will be mailed home early June.

No special preparation is necessary for this assessment. We just encourage our middle schoolers to do their best!

Thank you for your ongoing support of the cast and crew of Charles DeWolf Middle School!

The CDW Yearbook will include Grades 5-8, in addition to highlighting our CDW Class of 2023. A form will be sent home with your child(ren) on Monday, March 6th. Please complete the form, and provide payment of $65.00 (checks made out to "Charles DeWolf Middle School") to secure your CDW Yearbook.

All forms and payment must be given to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday, March 24th.

*A yearbook will be reserved for each Grade 8 student; however, yearbooks will be first come, first serve for students in Grades 5-7.

Beginning on March 15th, Ms. Adamo and Ms. DiPisa will be facilitating book clubs for 5th grade and 6th grade students. The book club will take place on Wednesdays for 5th graders and Fridays for 6th graders during lunch and will run for approximately 7 weeks. Each week, participants will be asked to read a few chapters at home to prepare for the upcoming meeting when students will participate in a variety of activities pertaining to what was read that week.

Space is limited so if your child(ren) would like to participate, they must get a permission slip from Ms. Adamo or Ms. DiPisa and return it by Friday, March 10th!

To honor Read Across America Day, CDW Staff & Families are invited to submit their original recipes to be a part of the CDW Digital Cookbook. Spending time together as a family, and sharing recipes as a community is a wonderful and unique way to read together and celebrate our different traditions. If you wish to participate, please see the flyer below, and email Ms. DiPisa your family's recipe with an accompanying image by March 10, 2023.

Congratulations to all of the CDW students who received High Honors for the 2nd Marking Period of the 2022-2023 School Year. Congratulations also to Jason Jun and Sara Kim for their recognitions for the Scholastic Art and Writing Contests. The students were recognized at the February 28th Board of Education meeting.

CDW Debate Team members Madeline Iacono and Neha Anoo won their debate at Tenafly Middle School on Thursday evening. The teammates earned 25 points for their Affirmative case against Cresskill in their final debate of the season and of their middle school careers! We can't wait to see what these two debaters will do next year as high school freshmen!

The students in Mrs. Vetrero's Music Class are remixing classics like, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and the "Happy Birthday to You" song. The students are learning the process of remixing songs using the program called, Music Lab. The students have been very creative with this project, and the outcomes are beyond impressive!

Grade 5th students were challenged to figure out how to make a light bulb turn on and discovered how to build a circuit in the process. Students then learned about conductors and insulators by testing a variety of materials to complete a circuit.

Math Lab students this cycle continued their volume investigations this week. They found objects around the room, measured their length, width, and height, and calculated the volumes.

A huge congratulations to CDW 6th grader, Emi Suwan, who competed in the USA Archery Nationals last weekend and earned 2nd Place in her division! Emi trains all year round and works super hard to prepare for competitions. The CDW community is extremely proud of Emi!

It is important to remember that our school is full of staff members who are here to help you and your child(ren) all year long. In some cases, you may not be sure whom to contact for specific information. For questions about your child(ren)'s classes, please utilize the teacher as a primary resource before implementing the flow chart.

Dr. Da Giau will be providing a Parent Workshop on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 1:00 PM or 7:00 PM to offer an overview of the State's standardized tests in Grades 3-8, test features, and question prototypes. See the flyer below for more information.

Below is information about delayed openings at CDW.

• Staff will be available for drop off to begin at 9:30 AM.
• Homeroom begins at 10:00 AM.
• After 10:00 AM, students need to enter through the front door for a tardy pass. Please drive around to the front to drop them off since the other doors need to be closed.

It is with regret that due to unforeseen circumstances, the NVOT All School Musical Production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels scheduled for March 1 - Sr. Citizens Performance, as well as performances on March 3, 4, and 5, is being postponed.

Reminders and Updates from CDW's Student Manager

All Grades 7-8 students interested in trying out for baseball this year need to attend a mandatory meeting on Thursday, March 9th in Room 208. The meeting will be after school from 3:00-3:10 PM.

All Grades 6-8 students interested in trying out for softball this year need to attend a mandatory meeting on Thursday, March 9th in Room 306. The meeting will be after school from 3:00-3:10 PM.

All 8th grade students in Old Tappan who may be interested in participating in athletics at Northern Valley Old Tappan High School (2023-2024) should use this link to indicate their interest.

The PTO will be offering a special St. Patrick's Day lunch on Friday, March 17th with Butterworths. Your child(ren) will have the option of a green bagel plain, with butter, or with cream cheese.

The CDW Lost and Found always has lots of items searching for owners! One way to help us locate the owner is by labeling your child's items with his/her name. In an effort to minimize the potential spread of illness at school, please keep your child home if he/she:

• has a fever. Students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school.
• is nauseous or is vomiting.
• has diarrhea.

Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III, the Board of County Commissioners, and the Bergen County Division of Mental Health & Addiction Services invite all middle and high school students to enter the Stigma-Free Sticker Contest! The Grand Prize winner will receive a $150 gift card. Entries are due by March 6th. Please see the attached flyer for rules and details and see Ms. Watters for more information.

We are collecting plastic film in the three containers outside of CDW. Once a month, from October through April, our CDW students in the Environmental Justice classes will retrieve the collection bags, weigh the contents, and track our collections. Our custodians will then bring our recycling to the collection center. In April, we will find out how our school ranked in the collection of recyclable plastic film. If we collect the most in our school size category, we could win another Trex bench for our outdoor classroom! Last year we collected 1,796 lbs of plastic!

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) at Charles DeWolf Middle School is open to any seventh grade student who meets all the membership requirements at the end of the third marking period in 2023.

During the week of April 24, 2023, eligible students will be identified and invited to apply

for admission to the NJHS by email. An email will also be sent to parents of eligible

students. The induction ceremony will be held during the week of May 15, 2023 (subject to

change).

The School Year Calendar for the PK-8 Old Tappan Public Schools was approved at Monday evening's Board of Education Meeting. For your convenience, this calendar also will be posted on our District website.
