Family Newsletter — Sunday, September 10, 2023
The first week of school was a success as we started the first day with freshmen and students new to Stanwood High School. The second day started with an assembly in the gym welcoming back all students, including Seniors walking in as students and Staff cheered them on.
During the week, Staff taught students schoolwide expectations and classroom routines. In each classroom I visited, staff and students were actively participating, socializing, and learning.
Safety is a top priority. On Monday, September 11th, Stanwood High School will perform our first evacuation drill of the year during the 2nd-period advisory.
One of my goals this year is to intentionally follow the board policy (see page 4 of 4) of not allowing students to leave campus during school hours. This also means students are not allowed to leave campus during lunch. During advisory on Tuesday, September 12th, Staff will complete a class lesson activity that includes this expectation. I ask parents/guardians to support this policy and discuss it with students.
I look forward to seeing parents/guardians at the Open House on Monday, September 11th. Have a great week!

FAFSA/WASFA 2024-25
Big changes are coming to financial aid applications this year. The Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) would like to help students and families navigate these changes.
The 2024-25 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will not be available until December 2023. The WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid) will also be delayed until the FAFSA opens. Applications usually open October 1st of a student’s senior year, so this is a major shift in the college planning process.
The good news is that this delay is due to positive changes in the financial aid application process:
The FAFSA form will be shorter and less complex.
More students will be eligible for federal Pell Grants, and the average Pell award will be larger.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
Fire cadet program earns grant
Our robust Career & Technical Education (CTE) program gives students the chance to explore a variety of career options, supports academic and life skills, and enables achievement for industry-defined work.
One of those industries is emergency services. We're proud to partner with Camano Island Fire and Rescue for our cadet program, and excited for our students to train with this new equipment thanks to a $28,000 grant!

Online safety resources for parents
Snapchat has launched new measures aimed at better protecting teens using the platform from unwanted contact, providing a more age-appropriate content experience, and cracking down on accounts that try to market in-appropriate content.
This effort includes a website, a YouTube series, to help families understand the basics of Snapchat, the key protections they offer for teens, and how to use the parental controls.
Menus and more!
Families can find breakfast and lunch menus for September and meal prices on our Food Services webpage and via the Menu button at the top of each school website.
We encourage families to submit a Free and Reduced Meal application. We recommend applications be completed online via Skyward Family Access by clicking the Food Service tab and then Applications to begin.
Students and families who qualify for Free and Reduced Meals don't just see benefits on food. They qualify for a host of other benefits, including reduced Snohomish County PUD bills, reduced YMCA membership costs, and much more.
Read about the other benefits HERE.
Visitors and volunteers
Visitors to SHS must enter the secured area that leads to the office and must check-in. All other building doors are locked.
SHS is excited to see so many people register to volunteer in our school! It's still okay to sign up and help in classrooms, lunchrooms, libraries, and more. Register to volunteer here: www.stanwood.wednet.edu/volunteer.

Schedule Changes - A Message from the Counselors
Due to the high volume of new registrations and schedule change requests, we cannot change schedules at this time unless a student is placed in an incorrect class level or is missing a class from their schedule.
Many classes are at capacity, meaning If we can change a class in a student's schedule, please know that other classes on a student's schedule will more than likely need to be changed as well.
SHS's policy is schedules will not be changed based on a teacher request, lunch preference, or wanting to be in a class with a friend.
Schedule change forms are available in the Counseling office. The counselors will start accepting schedule change request forms on Monday, September 11th through Monday, September 18th.
Please understand counselors may take several days to review your schedule change request.

In an effort to demonstrate sportsmanship in the stands we ask all spectators to adhere to these 5 basic guidelines:
- I will appreciate all good plays and players whether they compete for my team or my opponent.
- I will remember that school athletics are an extension of the classroom, and that learning is taking place.
- I will be positive and use respectful language towards players, coaches, officials, and other spectators.
- I will respect the abilities and sensitivities of our opponents and officials, regardless of the outcome of the contest.
- I will remember that my actions reflect on others, including students, school, and the community.
