The KVFS Leadership Team is interested in hearing your perspectives about the forest schooling experience and what you've noticed in your child(ren) as a result of attending KVFS. We've prepared a brief survey for you to fill out online. If you prefer to have a conversation in person or via telephone, please email Robin Hosemann, Leadership Team Member, at hosemannr@lafarge.k12.wi.us to set up a time to talk. Your responses will be confidential, with an option to include your contact information if you are open to discussion. Thank you so much for your time and thoughts. The results of the survey will help us as we continue to build the KVFS.

The KVFS Governance Council (GC) holds the Charter for the school. All parents and legal guardians are considered members of the GC and are entitled to one vote at the Annual Meeting which will usually be held in October. Our first Annual Meeting will be held on October 28th at 3:30 at the school. This is an opportunity to meet the Governance Council and learn about existing committees. The main purpose of the meeting is to elect 3 members to serve on the Governance Council. Nominees include two incumbents, Jackie Yocum and Julie Hoel, and one new member, Anne-Marie Fryer. Other nominations may be made at the meeting.

If you are unable to attend the Annual Meeting, you can use the ballot sent home in your child’s folder to vote. If you use this option, please return your ballot in the folder by Thursday, October 28th.

We expect that the meeting will last about 30 minutes and look forward to seeing you there.

Jason Rood is a UW-La Crosse senior education student conducting an early childhood Field Experience with KVFS. We are so excited that Mr. Jason will be with us in the morning now through December 3rd.

LFSD is partnering with the Department of Health Services to reduce barriers for students, staff, and families to find a testing location when necessary.

• Testing is by appointment only- we will not be doing random testing or testing students without parental consent.
• Testing will be available 9:30 - 3:30 Monday - Friday - contact Nurse Emily for an appointment.Testing may be conducted for symptomatic individuals or those wishing to be released early from a close contact quarantine, based on specific criteria.
• Both rapid antigen and PCR testing is available.
• Testing is free of charge and available to all students, staff, and anybody living in a student or staff member’s household.

Hey Parents,

Last week was our first Coffee Cart and it was a big success. It was so great to have a chance to connect over a warm beverage and talk all things KVFS and parenting. We'll be there again this Friday. Hope you can join us!

As the ground cools off and we have more frequent frosty mornings we are beginning to hear about children having cold toes. Time to pull out the wool socks and to start thinking about transitioning to warmer footgear. Apples, apples and more apples! This week we got to experiment with an apple peeler/corer, it was so much fun and the kids were so focused. Children got to help slice apples for dehydrating and freezing and some also got to try their hand at the peeler.

While our daily snacks are ever rotating with what's coming in from the harvest we thought you might like to hear about three recent favorites!

Warm rice and butternut squash with grated cheese and fresh red peppers.

Bread with apple butter, pears and scrambled eggs.

Warm oatmeal with raisins, salt, and butter and a bit of cinnamon maple syrup for those who wanted it.

Lastly, we have been gifted with a monthly stipend from Organic Valley and would like to serve the children occasional organic meat (summer sausage, hot dogs over the fire etc.) if you would prefer your child not consume meat at KVFS please let Jonel know at: kiesauj@lafarge.k12.wi.us

We sure like to sing and tell stories at Forest School. These repetitive rhymes, songs and stories are so important for young children and their language development. Through oral stories, children gain opportunities to imagine, sequence and ponder outcomes, and increase their listening and vocabulary skills. Through rhymes and songs children learn patterning, strengthen memory, practice pronunciation, and experiment with vocal range.

As you spend time with your child you may notice their growth, care and attunement to the natural world. Each day at Forest School the children are given the opportunity and time to explore the natural world. Through peer and adult modeling the children have gained valuable attunement skills in just a short time. When observing your child think of these questions: What does your child do when they see an insect or spider? Does your child stop and investigate something when you are on a walk or while playing in the backyard? Does your child identify tree leaves and birds by name? Do they notice and point out the different patterns found in the natural world? Do they share the enthusiasm and joy wit you after a discovery?
