Dear D15 Community,

February–wow! The year continues to chug along and we are officially in full swing preparing for the 2024-2025 school year. As I hope you saw, registration opened this week, we have a Full-Day Kindergarten Kick-Off at each of our schools on February 15, and all things Moving 15 Forward are truly moving right along!

Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early spring and I am very grateful for that as I am hoping we have already been through the worst of winter and that no additional eLearning Days are needed. Thank you for your understanding and patience as these decisions are never easy.

Now that we are officially in the month of February, I wanted to reiterate how much I love our District 15 community. We have amazing students, dedicated staff, involved families, and communities who support our schools. Thank you for all you do to make this a great school district for our community.

One of my favorite parts of this time of year is the 100th day of school! Some schools celebrate or have students and staff dress up! Check out these seriously adorable pictures below!

100th day of school

Moving 15 Forward - Home Schools Email

Last week, we shared a lengthy and informative “Home School” email with families. As a reminder, the home school shared is your school assignment based on your home address. There were several, for lack of a better word, disclaimers, for some students in specific EL and/or special education programs included within the email. If you have questions about your child(ren) Home School placement, please submit questions here. We are working through questions submitted as quickly as possible. We thank you in advance for your patience!

Reminder - Registration for the 2024-2025 School Year

Online student registration for the 2023-24 school year is now open! If you have not already started this process for your child(ren), please visit our registration page to begin.

All returning students MUST be registered and student fees must be paid by July 1, 2024, or they will be unenrolled from CCSD15. Students who have not completed their registration requirements will not receive a classroom assignment. Families that do not complete the registration by July 1, 2024, should contact their school to re-enroll their child(ren).

Board of Education Meeting

Our next Board of Education Meeting will be on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. Please note that the date was moved from the second Wednesday of the week due to scheduling conflicts.

Calling All Thomas Jefferson Past TJ Alum (Students and Staff)

The Thomas Jefferson Elementary community welcomes past TJ alumni (students and staff) to come see their school one last time before it becomes a middle school! Join TJ on April 25 from 6:30-7:30 pm.

Reminder - It’s 5Essentials Survey Time!

5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if at least 50 percent of the teachers and students complete the survey. We need at least 20 percent of our parents/guardians from your child’s school complete this survey, a parent/guardian supplement will also be generated for the school and is an important source of information from our families.

In District 15, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey for students, teachers, and families will be conducted from February 1 to March 29, 2024. You may take the survey between these dates by visiting the 5Essentials Survey website and selecting the appropriate survey to begin.

Watch the Spelling Bee Live!

Each year, District 15 students in Grades 4-8 participate in Spelling Bees in their classrooms. The winners progress to their School Bees, and the winner from each school participates in the District 15 Annual Spelling Bee. All School Bees were held prior to Winter Break.

This year’s annual District 15 Spelling Bee will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 7 p.m.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee organization incorporates both spelling and vocabulary components in their competition. In District 15, we also have vocabulary rounds at the School and District levels of competition. Rounds 5, 10, and 15 are vocabulary rounds. In those rounds, students are given a word and two choices of the definition. Students who respond with the correct definition continue on in the Bee.

The District Spelling Bee will be streamed live on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 7 pm. Click here for the live stream!

World Read Aloud Day 2024

World Read Aloud Day, founded by LitWorld, is an international advocacy day celebrated by over 170 million people worldwide. District 15 will be celebrating all week on February 5th-10th, 2024. Storytelling creates connections among people, and communities that exchange stories and engage in reading aloud together become stronger and show improved family health and nutrition, civic engagement, and participation in the labor market. District 15 is proud to participate in fostering a love of reading! If you are interested in participating at home, check out activities, read-alouds, and live events from around the world here.
