Dear EUSD Families and Staff,
May is such an eventful month on our campuses as we begin the season of state testing, recognition assemblies, activities, staff appreciation and culminating events. I invite each of you to join in the many ways we celebrate students over the next few weeks! Whether it is a band or choir concert, an Open House, a Student of the Year assembly, Film Guild Awards or an end of the year celebration - they all bring us together to marvel at the talents and accomplishments of our students. I love not only seeing the pride on our students' faces, but I love the joy I see in families in attendance. I am so grateful for the many opportunities we have to connect with students, staff and families.
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D.
Superintendent
EUSD Volunteers of the Year
We want to thank our many volunteers! You truly make a difference in what experiences and opportunities our students have in EUSD! On May 10th, we had the opportunity to celebrate our EUSD Volunteers of the Year. Each one has contributed their unique talents and time with our schools. We also named Jason Booher our EUSD District Volunteer of the Year for the thousands of hours of support he has contributed to safety in EUSD.
Literacy Instruction in EUSD
Our district has engaged in a systematic professional development plan to support the teaching of reading in EUSD. We will have trained 125 teachers and staff by the end of June focusing on primary teachers and learning specialists. The training includes 30-hours of a hands-on, interactive instruction that provides a complete understanding of Institute of Multi-Sensory Education’s enhanced Orton-Gillingham method, the essential five components to literacy, and the tools necessary to apply it in the classroom.
After participating in this accredited Structured Literacy course, teachers have a greater understanding of the structure and foundation of the English language as well as the research behind the Science of Reading. Educators also gained knowledge of how to assess and teach students in all three tiers of a multi-tiered system of support as well as students with dyslexia. We are already seeing the transfer of skills of this approach and teachers are excited as they see more proficient and confident readers and writers. Our teachers continue to be learners themselves to continually improve our efforts to support ALL children.
LCH: Update from Sacramento
La Costa Heights 5th graders went to Sacramento to visit the Capitol as a grade level field trip. This included 87 students, 30 parent chaperones, and 6 staff members. During the learning in preparation for the trip students met with a variety of experts including: Secretary of State ~ Dr. Shirley Weber, Carlsbad Mayor ~ Keith Blackburn, Encinitas Mayor ~ Tony Kranz, Policy Advisor White House ~ Elise Gout, Oceanside City Council Member ~ Eric Joyce, and representatives from kidsvote.org.
During the trip they had the opportunity to meet with lawmakers including Assemblymember Tasha Boerner, Assemblymember Bill Essayli, and Senator Catherine Blakespear, presenting about voting rights in the Secretary of State’s Assembly Hall, touring the Capitol building, visiting the California Museum, and having the opportunity to go on the Assembly floor (as seen in this picture) were some of the highlights of the trip. Following the trip, all students presented to families, students, and guests at La Costa Heights, sharing their learning and inspiring us all! Thank you to teachers, Katie Andan, Natalie Christ, Sean Murphy, and Sandra Chapman for organizing and making this experience possible for the 5th graders at LCH!
