Eagan High School Traffic Safety
December 8, 2023
A Message and Traffic Safety Update from Eagan High School and the Eagan Police Department
Updated Safety Message - December
Parents, staff, and student drivers:
We all know how important it is to keep our schools safe, especially when it comes to traffic.
Dakota County, the City of Eagan, and District 196 have worked hard to reconstruct and improve access to our campus from Diffley. Removal of trees along Braddock Trail has also greatly improved the safety visibility in the area.
With winter weather approaching, we need to be extra cautious on the roads. Traffic tends to be heavier this time of year, so it's important to allow for extra time and slower speeds when traveling to and from school. By taking the following steps, we can all do our part to make sure our schools are safe for everyone.
- Pedestrians and bicyclists should cross Diffley Road on the west side of the Braddock Trail and Diffley Road roundabout, or on the west side of the Daniel Drive and Diffley Road roundabout. Crossing guards are present there during the elementary, middle school and high school arrival and dismissal times.
- The intersections and crosswalks on Braddock Trail and Ventnor Avenue, as well as Pennsylvania Avenue, have pedestrian activated lights for use 24/7. Even with those lights, please use caution before stepping out. Vehicles MUST stop when lights are flashing.
- Drivers MUST stop for pedestrians - this is the law.
- Eagan Police are actively enforcing the traffic rules for safety.
- Bicyclists may be traveling as weather allows, please use great caution and yield to the students.
- District 196 will continue to bus students from the south side of Diffley Road into the schools.
- Parent drop off and pick up for students is either in the South entry or the East entry. Please drop students off at a sidewalk, not in the parking lot. Also, in the "horseshoe" drive at the South entry, do not drop students from the thru traffic, or inside lane. They should only be dropped off in the outside lane and sidewalk area.
- When students are departing from a vehicle it should always be onto the sidewalk – not across a lane of traffic.
- Bike racks at the high school are located at the East Entry. Do not attach bikes to trees- use the bike racks. Always lock your bicycle.
You can help improve safety along Diffley Road, Braddock Trail and in the area around our schools:
- Slow down. If the pedestrian crossing lights are flashing it demands that you stop.
- Posted speed limits are enforced.
- Pedestrians – please use caution before entering a crosswalk.
- Drivers - don’t use your cellphone while driving- avoid distractions while driving.
- The access road from the Daniel Drive roundabout down the hill into the South lot is for vehicles ONLY – not for bike riders or pedestrians.
- Use the pedestrian paved pathway from Diffley Road near Braddock Trail for walking and biking, away from the traffic.
- Please do your part to help keep everyone safe.
- Thank you!
