CVU Celebrations
November 17, 2023
Dear CVU Community: Has the whole “side-eye” thing been around for a long time and I just haven’t noticed it until now? Because I really love it! And our students are pros. Being a parent and a principal, it doesn’t take too much prompting to earn one of these glances. You should ask your student (or your friends) for their best side-eye. In fact, I think it makes a great discussion prompt for this Thanksgiving break. Try, “What do you want to give the side-eye to this year and what are you grateful for?” A perfect way to backdoor the gratitude discussion.
Speaking of gratitude, we are especially appreciative of our AMAZING EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS this week. I salute you with whatever the opposite of a side-eye is. CVU doesn’t work (quite literally) without you!
Congratulations to the Girls Cross Country team for winning the New England Championship!

Student Council Corner
Hello Everyone - this is Mira! This week in Student Council, students prepared festivities for Gratitude Week. When planning gratitude week, we looked for a simple way students could reflect on what they're thankful for. This week we have had a table during lunch where CVU community members can write their name and what they're thankful for and put it in a bowl. Gratitude Week ends tomorrow with the Student Council's Second Annual Turkey Trot 5K which begins at 10:00 in the CVU Faculty parking lot. This is Student Council's biggest fundraiser all year! Come Saturday to show support for the CVU Community and see your student leaders in action, enjoy locally sourced food, win prizes and more. Have a wonderful break!

From Amy Wardwell: The Holocaust and Modern Genocide class and the Utopian Literature class came together Thursday, November 16, to hear a presentation by Shelburne resident Tom Glaser. Tom is the child of two Holocaust survivors and spoke with students about how his parents Daisy and Viktor Glaser of Czechoslovakia experienced that history. He also talked about the impact of the Holocaust on the children of survivors. Anyone who is interested can see Tom's presentation at this link from the Vermont Holocaust Memorial's YouTube channel.
Emma Destito, class of ‘21, ran a “Running Start” workshop at CVU to encourage women to run for office. Several current and former AP Gov students took part. A panel including Joan Lenes, Chea Waters, and Taylor Smalls shared their experiences and encouraged the attendees to network, define their issues, and say yes when asked to run for office.
8 student-athletes attended the statewide Athletic Leadership Conference in Burlington on Nov. 13-14. Seniors Grace and Jack, juniors Billy, Rose, Alice, and Abby, and sophomores Dylan and Cooper participated in the 2-day conference that focused on leadership, communication, teamwork and gratitude.
From John Bennett: CVU's Scholars Bowl continued its impressive start Friday, 11/10 by winning 5 varsity matches in a meet at Spaulding High School in Barre. The varsity team defeated teams from Hanover, St. Johnsbury, Lyndon, Essex and Burlington to bring its record to 20-0 on the season. We also had great outcomes from our B team (4-1) and C teams (3-2, with 1 loss coming to our B team). This record represents the best start to a season in team history.
So far this year 16 students have participated in Scholars Bowl events. The following team members played on Friday: Elias L, Colin R (12th grade), Jacob G, James H, Zoe M, Daniel S, Kyle S (11th grade) Clay N, Leah R, Charles R, Grace W (10th grade).
CVU will be back in action at a tournament at Essex HS on December 1.
I'm not totally sure what's happening in this photo, but I do know the group was practicing saving someone's life (from hypothermia, I think). So...that's awesome!
From Nick Clark: The CVU E-Hawks Esports team wrapped up its regular season this week. Over the last 8 weeks, we've had teams competing in 5 titles and we're advancing multiple teams into the postseason. The following teams should be in the playoffs once we return from break:
- Splatoon 3: CVU_SEA-Team placed 7th out of 40 teams during the regular season (Addison H, Kayla F, Julia F, Bill F, Luke A)
- Overwatch 2: WatchHawks Varsity placed 11th out of 85 teams during the regular season (Alex F, Justin B, Cesar S, Luke D, Kayla F, Moses G, Spencer A)
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: KartHawks placed 24th out of 66 teams during the regular season (Riley S, Cesar S, Jacob G, Danica B, Ava F, Hailey C, Evan S)
We would like to express our gratitude to all the players and coaches for making this another successful season. Our spring season starts on February 5th and we're always looking for more players.
From Amy Wardwell: Members of the Volunteer Outreach Club Tabitha B, Dylan F, Mia M and Chloe A helped pack Thanksgiving boxes for local families at the Charlotte Food Shelf on Thursday. This is one of many ways club members are helping out during the holiday season! Be on the lookout for our "Elf Selves" as we work with the VT Children's Trust Polar Express event in December!
Snelling held their traditional Harvest Fest this week and celebrated with amazing food and friends! Students created their best hand turkeys and shared what they are grateful for in their lives. Thank you to all the Snelling families who contributed delicious food! Happy Thanksgiving!
From Karen Kirkland: Sometimes you have to change lesson plans on the fly based on the moment. These industrious and compassionate AP Statistics students incorporated their statistical learning while making gratitude cards. We enjoyed a block of calmness and presence.
From Leanne Morton: The Latin IV class celebrated their study of perfect passive participles with a waffle feast on Wednesday. It was a sweet way to end our unit!
The Reed/Morton advisory celebrating the day before vacation with an amazing pavlova made by our one and only Yvonne Miceler.
