Elementary Update
Staff and students were extremely excited to compete in our Mid-Winter Spirit Week. Teachers calculated a daily percentage and the winning class for K-2 and 3-6 will end the week with ice cream cups. There was noticeable fun and abundant participation.
Kellan Morgan and Billy Taylor continue to progress into the music department. Elementary music has been practicing their basic fundamentals: ie. keeping a steady beat, learning how to interpret rhythms both by ear and by reading music, as well as developing their vocals with solfege warm ups. 4th graders have continued to use their recorders in music, most recently they learned a new note, F Sharp. 6th grade drama spent the first semester working on acting exercises in preparation for a performance this spring. Right now they are writing and rehearsing their own two person scenes with the goal that by early May we will be able to perform a few abridged scenes for a live audience.
Lastly, we have one more week to raise life saving donations through Kids Heart Challenge. Donations conclude February 16th, 2024. Special incentives for the top fundraisers include; Top 10 students get a special pizza party lunch with Mr. Graham and Mrs. Mikelson and the TOP CLASS will get EXTRA P.E.!
Middle School Update
We are so pleased to let you know that behaviors at Middle School lunch have GREATLY improved. All but a very few of our students are meeting the lunchroom expectations every day. Last Friday we celebrated our success with small candy rewards and this Friday we will celebrate with ice cream or Oreo treats. If behaviors continue to meet expectations we will transition to students choosing their own seats as long as they have not had problems following the expectations. Thank you for being supportive of our expectations!
We celebrated our first quarter honor roll students, Character Trait winners for December–Caring–and January–Cooperation along with our Bus Riders of the Week for last week with doughnuts, choice of candy treats, and certificates. This assembly was followed by the PBIS reward activity of the month. Our January reward was for students who have worked hard all of first semester to keep their grades above “C” level and had no major behavior referrals for the month. Those 65 students had a field trip to Cheney Lanes for bowling and pizza. We are proud of how hard the majority of our students are working each day to be respectful, responsible, and ready to learn.
This month our Character Trait of the Month is Honesty, and our PBIS focus is being on time for class. Students will earn the February reward of game time following our awards assembly on February 28th. That day we will also celebrate first semester honor roll recipients and students who brought up two or more grades from first to second quarter with our Reardan Rising Award given by our Reardan School Board members. Assembly begins at 1 pm in the commons if you are interested in attending.
Reminder, our Middle School Mt. Spokane Ski trip permission slips need to be returned as soon as possible. We would love to have all of them back by next Friday, February 16th. Please remember to use the QAR codes on the flyer to sign TWO WAIVERS for the equipment and ski lesson. February 21st is going to be a great day! Please email dnewsum@reardansd.net if you have any questions or would like to chaperone this adventure! Chaperones need to be cleared by the district office prior to attending the event. Thank you parents!

Options Program Update
Third quarter Enrichment Classes are up and running after a week break. Boy, did we sure miss these kids!
One of the classes being taught to grades K-3 is "Storybook Adventures" . In this class, students are learning about story elements - main idea, imagery, author's purpose, voice, reading comprehension and learning how to write a story summary! We read a book this week and created our own book cover! The students used the author's voice and word choice to create their image of the story!
Our students also got the pleasure of learning about Native American culture from our very own Reardan alumni, Devon Peone. Devon will be teaching Native American culture and games to grades K-3 this quarter. The students learned beginning Salish and made beaded necklaces this week.
The awe and wonderment of our students is amazing to watch!

https://skinwrockies.com/5th-grade-ski-passport/ Do you have a 5th grader? The State offers Free ski passes and discount season pass after that for some mountains. I’ve confirmed with Mount Spokane that they participate in this passport. There are some black out dates to be aware of before you head up the mountain. Too good to pass up. Spread the word to those that have younger than 5th grade to look into this when they get to that age:) What a Great opportunity for 5th graders….
