The Leader In Me - The 7 Habits of Happy Kids
HABIT 5 - SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood means that it is better to listen first and talk second. By taking the time to listen to another person, you reach a higher level of communication. Teaching Habit 5 to young children is done by first considering their age and development. Young children find it difficult to understand another's point of view. This habit is best approached by introducing listening as a skill that should be practiced. Learning to listen without interrupting and learning to listen with your ears, your eyes, and your heart will help children build a foundation for Habit 5.
Some activities to practice Habit 5 at home:
- Play a game of "Pretend Listening". Take turn talking to one another while on of you "pretends" to listen. Talk together about how frustrating it is when you are ignored.
- Body Language is many times more important than words. Play a game where you each try to guess the other's emotion (happy, sad, angry, frustrated, bored, etc.) without using any words, just body language.
- Demonstrate how saying the same phrase in a different tone of voice can give the phrase a completely different meaning. Try emphasizing different words in the phrase "I didn't say you did it" and then have your child tell you how the meaning changed.

Counselor's Corner
Hi Parents,
This month’s focus at IKE is Respect. One way to think about Respect is “seeing value in all people and things & treating them with care.” Many people feel respected in different ways, and we hope this month inspires discussions with your family about what respect means to you and how you can practice it together! Respect is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Kind. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.
Respectfully,

Nurse Anna Information!
Dear Parents/Guardians,
My name is Anna Robinette and I am the Eisenhower School Nurse. I hope that everyone had a fun and healthy summer! Below are a few important reminders that will help keep our students healthy and safe throughout the school year:
· The USD 207 health policy states that all students who have been sent home and/or absent due to fever (99.6 or greater), vomiting, diarrhea or nausea, should not return until the illness has been absent for at least 24 hours without the use of medications.
· Per district policy, students are not allowed to have any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) in their possession. All medication must be kept at the nurse’s clinic. I have a standing order to dispense Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Mylanta/Tums, Caladryl and Benadryl. All other medication must have a dispense form signed by the doctor in order to be given at school.
· Some student files are still missing essential information. Please continue to provide shot records, physicals (one time requirement for those new to the state of KS and 8 years old and younger), emergency contact numbers and any new health information on your child.
· Please call the school for any absence. This allows us to record the absence as excused for illness, appointment, parent request, family trips etc… Otherwise absences will remain unexcused.
· Hearing and vision screenings will be held at Eisenhower on November 6th, 7th and 8th. If your child has glasses/contacts, be sure that they wear them during this time. If they have known hearing issues, let me know prior to the screening. They will bring home these results, so check their back packs.
Thanks in advance for all you do to keep your kids healthy! If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you,
Anna Robinette, RN Eisenhower School Nurse (913)651-6663
