Crescent Lake Connection
Newsletter of Crescent Lake School: Issue 5 - Nov. 3, 2023
Service to Otters
In the month of November, our monthly theme at school is service and selflessness. We are beginning this month with our annual canned food drive that benefits the Life Ministries Food Pantry. Students are also working in smaller cross-grade otter family groups in order to build community and practice collaborative skills. The goal for this month will be for our 6th grade students to lead our otter family meetings and lead their group at our Fall Festival which will be held during the days before Thanksgiving. Help encourage your child to practice selflessness by finding ways to help others in our community. We will also be recognizing and supporting those who serve our country and defend our freedoms as we celebrate Veterans Day. This is great month for learning and working together!
Parent conferences are taking place this month. If you have not scheduled your conference yet, reach out to your child's teacher or call the main office of school at 603-569-0223 and we will help connect you. We work as partners in the education of your child.

Golden Can Award & Canned Food Drive
The Crescent Lake School Student Council has been helping our school raise awareness of helping others in our community by promoting our current canned food drive. The class with the most points by next Tuesday, November 7, will win the Golden Can Award. More importantly, we will be helping many families in our area.
All donations will be delivered to the LIFE Ministries Food Pantry on Main Street in Wolfeboro. This is our last weekend for collecting items. Please help!
The fifth grade is raising money now for the end of year Ecology School trip. The funds raised through this fundraiser will help offset the bus cost as well as provide scholarships for students.
If you're going to be doing some shopping for the holidays, anyway, check it out! It's not just wrapping paper; there are a lot of other items available! Use this link to shop: Charleston Wrap
Attention Families of Ice Skaters: We are looking for all ice skating fees to be paid by Thursday, Nov. 30. The fee is $20 if your child does not need rentals and $44 if your child needs rentals.

Trunk-or-Treat
CLS students and families had a great time and a beautiful fall night to come together as a community at our PTO Trunk-or-Treat event held on Friday, Oct. 27. Thank you to our PTO and volunteers from the high school for making this a great family event for everyone!
Halloween Parade
Fourth grade students led the way with our Halloween Parade this past week. It was a fun way to share in the holiday spirit and celebrate as a school community!
Unicycle Team Begins
Our One Wheeled Wonders team held their first practice of the year and drew a crowd of onlookers as they began to practice their skills. One student was quoted as saying, "It's just like riding a bike." All students will have the opportunity to learn skills to ride in PE class later this year and can then practice and try out to be on the team.
Are you raising a child who is not biologically yours? Are you a grandparent or other relative caregiver? Are you looking for support from others who understand your situation and similar circumstances? Are you interested in learning about resources available in your community?

After School Clubs at Crescent Lake - Fall Session Update
Our fall session of After School Clubs at CLS are winding down - only one week left in this fall session. There will be NO after school clubs on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Our last After School Club for this session will be Wednesday, Nov. 15.
Please reach out to the main office of school if dismissal plans change for your child from week to week.
The first trimester interim reports have been sent home to all families - but know that you can always access and view your child's progress throughout the trimester and school year by accessing JumpRope.
JumpRope is the grading program that our teachers use to track and record student progress towards our grade level curriculum standards. Attached to the link below is a brief overview of what JumpRope is and how it works for the parent/guardian viewpoint. All parents/guardians should have received a welcome email to log in the JumpRope system. Our Curriculum Director, Dr. Katey Hills, is in the process of creating a series of short videos on various features of JumpRope and competency-based grading that will be posted and shared in the coming weeks. If you have not received the welcome email and login information, please reach out to our Dr. Hills at khills@sau49.org
At the end of each trimester of school, we will be presenting students who have earned a 3.0 or higher in all Work Habits in the summary section of their report card the Otter Pride Award. Families can track their child's progress towards earning the Otter Pride Award by logging into JumpRope.
Lions Club Vision Screening & CLS Nurse Update
We will also be holding our annual height and weight screenings which happen every year. This will be conducted with the help of Nurse Brady and as part of PE class.
The weather certainly changed this week! Help your child be ready for recess by dressing in layers!
Upcoming PTO Meeting
The next meeting of the Crescent Lake PTO is Monday, November 13 at 6 PM at Crescent Lake School. We will be reviewing our Trunk-or-Treat event and working on plans for upcoming events and support of the school. Please join us!
Originality Celebrated
The month of October ended with Ms. Emery's 5th grade class giving a presentation about the importance of recognizing everyone's originality and unique and individual character.
In Unison
Our fourth grade students are earning their belts and how to read music at the same time as they are playing recorders in Music class. And in the hallway. And at recess. And.....
4th Grade Science
Fourth Grade students were recently studying about both volcanoes and density of liquids as part of their science standards. It just happened to be fun as well!
District Grading System Updates
Our district has made some changes to how grades are tabulated in the online Jump Rope grading system. Please view the letter attached through the link below, visit the Curriculum Instruction and Assessment page on our district website often for updates and information, and reach out with any questions. Thank you!
If your child is interested in participating, please return the permission slip to Mrs. McGuire by Monday, November 13.
Interested in Volunteering at CLS?
Help our Community Succeed!
We are still in need of a CLS staff position helping prepare and serve meals in our CLS kitchen. If you are interested in applying for this position, please reach out to Brian Beaverstock at bbeaverstock@sau49.org for details.
Can't commit to work five days a week to help? That's okay!! While we are searching for a candidate, we would gladly accept regular volunteers! All volunteers must be fingerprinted and go through the school district background check procedures. Once approved, we could use support for serving our hot lunch meals. Lunches at CLS begin at 11:30 am and typically end by 12:45 pm. If you can consistently help serve on one day a week, we otter have you here and lend a hand! Please contact Brian Beaverstock if you are able to volunteer and help - even on a short term or once a week basis. Thank you!
