Message From The Superintendent
I reluctantly admit that I am slowly turning into a character from the “Turning into Your Parents” commercials. I sometimes wonder if it trickles into the workplace. I learned that with intentional action, you can avoid it.
There are many reasons why we “turn into our parents”. Here are a few:
It is how we are wired.
We look up to our parents as role models, and we do what we learn.
Change becomes more difficult when there is a status quo.
We recently faced the third bullet point, change being difficult, in regards to our district’s mission statement. Through the duration of last school year, we reflected on our district’s mission statement that read: Columbus School District will empower students to be community, career, and college ready. The mission served the district well for approximately a decade. Even though it would have been easier to continue on with the status quo, we realized it was time to adapt and change.
Through an intense process, the following new mission statement was developed: Columbus School District ensures each student will be prepared for future success. In the process of making a new mission statement, we used the question, “ Why do we exist?”, as our guide. In the end, we believe we answered that question. Furthermore, we believe that we have a statement that can engage all students and schools in the district.
The change might be insignificant for some on the surface. In my opinion, to ensure that Columbus is an exceptional place for students to learn and staff to work, it was a major change. I am proud of the team for taking on this change to provide more clarity versus settling for the status quo!

Charlie's News
In August, the Columbus School District introduced a new publication, "Charlie's News," to enlighten the community about the district. Based on stakeholder feedback, we continue to put an emphasis on increasing our external communication. Charlie’s News was intended to take our stakeholders on a journey through various aspects of the district's operations, student achievements, and initiatives. If you have not had a chance to check it out, please feel free to click on the link. Our intention is to create this publication annually. We hope that you enjoy it!
