From the Superintendent's Desk
The Year has Started!
I would like to thank the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to serve Richmond Elementary and its community. Research shows that high performing schools have common ingredients: involved parents, quality teachers, and an administration that values and protects instructional time. Partnership is the last ingredient to the recipe that holds everything together. Partnership in schools occurs when everyone comes together collaboratively in support of quality education for each and every student. Richmond is known for: providing quality education; awesome teachers; many volunteers; and involved parents. My goal this year is to get to know the school, to engage with and become part of the community, and help build positive partnerships between the community and the school.
A key to partnership is communication. If you have questions, please call/email/walk-in and ask. If you are confused or feel that the school is communicating contradictory information, please let us know. Effective communication is a two-way street, if what we are saying is not being interpreted correctly, it is not effective communication.
The big topic is COVID. This school year is off to a good start and we have not had to close due to student or staff quarantines. So far, 4 local schools have been forced to shift to remote learning for a week due to quarantine and infection rates on their campuses.
Below is a list of things to consider as parents.
- If your child(ren) have a fever or are showing symptoms, please keep them at home and let them rest. Giving them a fever reducer or cough medicine does not stop them from being contagious.
- If you are notified that your child(ren) need to be quarantined, please email or call the office. We will setup an Independent Study and gather assignments from the teacher(s). Learning continuity is important. Losing a week of instruction will set the students back.
- Richmond must follow CDC and California quarantine guidelines. Katie Hart from LCOE supports us as the Lassen County Health Department is unable due to the high number of cases in the county.
- If your child needs to be tested to prove they are negative, please contact the office. We have rapid tests on site.
- Richmond will not test a student without parent consent. It is preferable to have the parent present as most students have wanted their own parent to administer the test.

RCA Meeting and Election
Parents interested in joining the RCA and being present for the election should attend the RCA Meeting this Tuesday, Sept 14th in front of the Gym.
School Counselor
Mrs. Huffman is our new school counselor and will be supporting students through whole class lessons on social emotional resilience and positive behavior. She is also available to meet with students individually. If the need arises, please contact her at mhuffman@richmondelementary.com.
Absences
Please call the office at (530) 257-6163 if your student(s) will be absent. It is important that the school keep detailed records of student attendance as it affects our funding. Absences also influence truancy and truancy notifications. After three days absent without a valid excuse the school is required to send the first Truancy Notification. Single day absences can be excused with a valid excuse but students who are out three or more days due to an illness requires a medical note from your pediatrician or family doctor. Please be sure the doctor states the required number of days they are to be out of school or the date they may return to school.
Sports Physicals
Friendly reminder that students need to have a current sports physical to participate in school sports.
Cross-Country
Mrs. Matchniff is our Cross Country coach this school year and practices begin this Tuesday, Sept 14th. The Signup sheet and permission forms can be found in the Office.
Lunches
School lunches are now free. Richmond is part of the Seamless Summer Program that provides school lunches to all students. Please note that milk is included in the hot lunch, but students will need to buy a milk if they bring a cold lunch. Milk is included in the program provided menu.
Homework Club
Homework Club starts this Tuesday, Sept 14th in Mrs. Cluck's classroom. It is available to students in Grades 4-8 who need support completing their homework. Homework Club will meet every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:15 - 7:55 am. If your student will be attending, please remind them that it is not a social time but an opportunity to get caught up and get help.
Parent Volunteers
Parents can sign up at Back 2 School Night with the teachers. If parents want to help with reading groups or work with students, the school needs to have a cleared background check on file. Fingerprints through LiveScan can be done at LCOE, call (530) 257-2196 and setup an appointment.
Book Fair
The fall book fair this year was a huge success. It was great to see so many families who were able to attend. We sold $3,300 in merchandise which earned us $1,200 in book profit. We always use our book profit to purchase new books for the library and fill our teacher wish lists. Thank you for your continued support. You are amazing!
The winners of the poster raffle were Addison Davis, Kemper Bailey, Xander Myers, and Chloe Matchniff. The winners of the fun raffle were Annalyn Smith, Tessa Gard, Ryann Gray, and Charlize Lewis. Congratulations to all of you! Our next fair will be in the spring. Please continue to encourage your students to read. Reading is an endless adventure.
