Adult Education Classes Are Filling Up! 💯
Adult Ed - New Instructors 💥
We also welcome Dylan Vose, another new Adult Education welding instructor! He will teach an Advanced Welding class starting as early as March. This will follow our Intro to Welding course, enabling many of our students to combine two courses into one VSAC Advancement Grant. Dylan is currently the welding instructor at the Northland Job Corps and is pursuing his teaching degree.
Even More Full Classes 🚰
Apparently, there are a lot of broken lawnmowers in Addison County because David Mills' Small Engine Repair Adult Education class filled so fast that we had to open a second section. David is also going to teach Tractor Safety as soon as the weather is suitable in April, and that class is already filling up.
The January LNA class also started this month and is FULL with a waitlist! This class has a nice mix of Porter employees and local residents funded through a combination of grants and scholarships.

Happenings From Class 🏫
Construction Technology 1 - Framing 🏘️
Students in Construction Tech 1 have been honing their construction skills through a unique and hands-on project - creating "mini houses" that showcase their expertise in framing techniques. These miniature structures, even smaller than the Tiny House, have provided a platform for students to apply their knowledge of framing plans, plate layout, wall framing, and rafter cutting, all acquired through their participation in the SkillsUSA competition.
The "mini houses" project has proven to be an invaluable opportunity for these aspiring construction professionals to put theory into practice. By constructing these scaled-down versions of houses, students have gained practical experience that will undoubtedly shape their future careers in the construction industry. This hands-on approach has allowed them to develop their skills in a tangible and meaningful way, mastering the nuances of framing and building techniques.
Construction Technology 2 - Fun Projects 😺
Engineering & Architecture - AutoCAD 🌉
The Engineering & AutoCAD class is working on an AutoCAD unit that is intended to give them the basic computer drafting skills they need to use AutoCAD as part of a high school co-op or summer internship.
Students selected design projects of personal interest to practice their new skills. One project is a design for an enclosed porch for the front of a student's house. Another includes as-built drawings of a gear-driven drawbridge built by a student from last year using parts from our VEX robotics kits. One student made a bridge-themed Christmas ornament to be etched and cut on our laser cutter.
Human Services - Making Butter 🧈
Human Services students kicked off their Preschooler Unit by making butter from heavy cream. They then connected the activity to the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS).
These and other state standards provide a roadmap that details the type of experiences and learning opportunities we want all children from birth through grade 3. They prepare these children for both academic and life success.
Students also began designing lesson plans of their own. They relied on both the VELS and the three considerations entailed within NAEYC's Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Commonality, Individuality, and Context.
Sustainable Agriculture - Business Cards 📇
Sustainable Agriculture students designed business cards as a component of the Employment Skills unit. This hands-on project aims to equip students with the essential tools for professional networking and future career success.
By incorporating business card design into the curriculum, we are providing our students with a tangible representation of their skills and professional identity. This exercise not only hones their design skills but also encourages them to think strategically about how they present themselves to potential employers.
Diesel Technology - Bus Engine 🚌
Diesel students have been troubleshooting how to take an engine out of a bus. With the challenges of tight spacing, but with plenty of ingenuity, the students have figured out that instead of pulling the engine out of the bus, it is more efficient to pull the bus body off of the engine!
Diesel Technology - Oil Testing 🥽
Diesel student Isaac Preston takes an oil sample out of his truck to have it diagnosed at an oil analysis laboratory, giving him insights to what contaminants are present in his oil, and the possible causes of contamination.
Medical Professions - Teaching Handwashing 🖐️
The Medical Professions 1 class visited the students at the Parent-Child Center this month. The PAHCC students read story books they created, which teach the children about the importance of handwashing. The little kids loved spending time with the big kids!
The Medical Professions students gained invaluable experience by interacting with young children, helping them develop their communication, empathy, and teaching skills. Engaging with a younger audience allowed the future healthcare professionals to strengthen their ability to simplify medical concepts, making them more relatable and understandable to patients of all ages.
Industrial Design & Fabrication - Hands-On Math 🪚
This month, students in Industrial Design and Fabrication tried a new cutter head with 9 teeth on it in different materials. They learned the value of the mathematics behind manufacturing processes firsthand as students worked through the math with their instructor and plugged in values to run the machine for the material they were cutting.
For instance, we ran aluminum at 2500 RPM on the head and 60 inches per minute of feed while the same cutter ran at 320 RPM and 8 Inches per minute for Steel.
Students found the variables for each material in the Machinery's Handbook to practice retrieving available information. The value in the math really stands out as the workpiece will not heat up. If the math is correct and the feeds are right, 85% of the heat produced can be drawn from the work and discarded with the chip coming off the workpiece. This is some hands-on learning at its best!
Design & Illustration - Text as Art 🖼️
Students are building their technical skills in Adobe Illustrator, a vector-based software commonly used in the design industry. As part of the “Text As Art” unit, they created portraits made completely out of type. Come see more of the results at Open House - students are putting together an exhibition of their work!
Creating portraits solely using type requires a unique approach to problem-solving. Students must carefully consider text placement, font selection, and composition, enhancing their ability to think critically and find imaginative solutions.
Culinary Arts - Age Well VT 🥪
The Glass Onion welcomed 30 Age Well community members to a three-course plated lunch. The menu featured a chicken and rice soup, the famous hot Sandwich Stack, and a trio of desserts. The students were well prepared, and engaged, and provided warm welcomes to the event.
The opportunity to host the Age Well community members in our culinary arts restaurant was an invaluable experience for our students. Through events like these, our students gain practical experience and learn how to cater to different culinary preferences and dietary restrictions.
Medical Professions - Bovine Veterinarian 🫀
Medical Professions students were treated to another exciting and educational visit from Dr. Becky Allen, a bovine veterinarian. Dr. Allen's visit took place earlier this month, where she provided valuable insights into the complexities of the brain by bringing in cow brains for discussion. Students had the opportunity to learn about the different sections of the brain and their functions, providing them with a unique perspective of the intricacies of this vital organ.
Learning about the brain in such an interactive manner has immense benefits for the students' future careers. As aspiring medical and healthcare professionals, understanding the brain is crucial in diagnosing and treating neurological conditions. Dr. Allen's presentation not only provided an engaging experience but also fostered critical thinking skills and analytical reasoning, which are essential in the medical field.
Human Services - Classroom Worksite Placements 🏫
Human Services students continue to thrive as they work under the thoughtful guidance of their worksite placement mentors. Here, we see various students supporting all sorts of important learning in K-2 classrooms at Mary Hogan School classrooms.
Students continue to learn more about the whys and hows behind things such as socio-dramatic play and early literacy skills. They are also developing a strong foundation of skills related to guiding children's behavior. Students and instructor Ulti Danforth are most grateful to the skilled professionals and community partners who open their learning environments to PAHCC students!
Medical Professions - HOSA Membership 🧑⚕️
VT HOSA recently held a membership drive and now ALL of our Medical Professions 1 & 2 students are VT HOSA members! Based on our 100% participation, HOSA is donating $125 in our name to the UVM Children’s Network.
HOSA is a national Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) for future health professionals. HOSA empowers future health professionals to become leaders in the global health community through education, collaboration, and experience.
Medical Professions - Pediatrics Community Partner 🌈
Instructor Jennifer Baker has gotten confirmation that Rainbow Pediatrics will allow Medical Professions seniors to shadow this year! Rainbow Pediatrics is a pediatrician’s office in Middlebury offering medical and behavioral care to youth aged 0-24.
This is exciting news after several years of no shadows due to COVID. This is a wonderful opportunity for those students who express interest in pediatrics as a potential career!
Engineering & Culinary - Classroom Collaboration ☕
Creative problem-solving & teamwork in action: What does the engineering instructor do when she realizes just before class that she forgot to pick up treats on the way to work to celebrate a student milestone? She calls the culinary program for help, of course!
Hot sticky buns and coffee service appeared at 10 am, lending a professional touch to our end-of-semester colleague celebration. Note to all - you may want to fabricate a culinary emergency of your own, as those sticky buns are FABULOUS straight from the oven.
Culinary Arts - Preschool Dining Fun 🍪
The culinary students recently had the opportunity to showcase their skills while creating a memorable dining experience for the children at Mary Hogan Preschool. The event featured a delectable menu that left the young ones delighted and introduced them to the world of fine dining.
In addition to the sumptuous meal of grilled cheese, hand-cut French fries, and a refreshing fruit salad, the culinary students engaged the preschoolers in a hands-on culinary experience. The children were given the opportunity to decorate sugar cookies with royal icing and sprinkles, allowing them to express their creativity and explore the art of baking. Under the guidance of the talented culinary students, the preschoolers enthusiastically embraced this culinary adventure.
Engineering and Architecture - Green Mountain Avionics ✈️
Engineering and Architecture student, Jayson Flores-Torres, has been job shadowing at Green Mountain Avionics. Jayson got to shadow GMA tech, Trevor Larkin, who is building an instrument control panel to retrofit an older Cessna aircraft with state-of-the-art avionics instrumentation.
The panel is one of many being built in Middlebury for a fleet of Cessna aircraft in Guyana. Jayson was there shadowing Trevor and 4 other GMA technicians for two days to learn more about careers in avionics, many of which can start right here in Addison County.
Diesel and Automotive Technology - DMV Officer Visit 👮
Rob Helm, DMV officer, visited the diesel 1, diesel 2, and auto 104 classes this week. He talked about commercial driver's licenses, roadside inspections, and life as a DMV officer in VT. We even got the cool opportunity to weigh student vehicles and test lights and sirens! This relationship-building is such a boost for young adults and law enforcement.
Sustainable Agriculture - Chocolate Bars 🍫
Sustainable Agriculture students warmed up to learning dairy cattle evaluation by judging a common product—chocolate bars! They weighed several attributes of a dairy cow among 3 others in the group while deciding which chocolate bar one wants to buy.
Learning to make positive choices, and justifying them, is an essential life skill. Students displayed their first choice of chocolates along with chocolate and dairy cow classes.
Mechanical Science - MIDI Wood Lathes 🪵
Last year, Nick Cantrick was able to purchase 5 MIDI wood lathes as part of the Perkins grant for use in both Pre-tech and Construction. Construction built some great portable mounting carts for these lathes so we have set up a temporary lathe lab in Mechanical Science for our next unit.
Students will get an intro to turning, working through each chisel's use and proper sharpening with the end product being a spinning top. A big thanks to Bill Biederman for reaching out with some fresh cherry for our turning blanks! So far we have roughed in our blank using the spindle roughing gouge. Stay tuned for more pictures to come of our finished tops!
Medical Professions - Foot Care 🦶
This month, we had a visit from Val Doria, RN. She explained the importance of foot care, especially for a person with diabetes. The Medical Professions 1 class participated in her question and answer sheet on a made-up patient.
Mechanical Science & Construction - Classroom Collaboration 🔨💡
As part of the Mechanical Science program, we try to get students out in job shadows in some of the technical fields that Mechanical Science feeds into.
This year, Construction and Mechanical Science tried something a little different - we switched classes! Nick took all four of the MechSci classes for two days, and ran them through safe circular saw use, giving them challenges to practice with this new tool. This gave students the opportunity to check out the construction program. More importantly, they got a sense of Nick and his approach to teaching construction to see if this might interest them moving forward at the Career Center.
Meanwhile, the Construction 1 students worked in the Mechanical Science lab getting a quick intro to residential electrical: wiring up an outlet, switch, and light on a framing project they had just completed.
