A message from the principal
October sure flew by in a blink and November is already here! This month, our Character Strong theme is gratitude. Teachers and students are focusing on things that they are grateful for. I can say I am personally grateful for the incredible students, teachers and families I get to work with each and every day. This is a great place to be and there are so many things happening here each day. Just this week, I was able to observe some first graders working on identifying and sorting words into word families, some fifth graders learning to use fractions with clocks and kindergarten students practicing their phonics, phonemic awareness and letter formation skills. Our students have also been visiting the observatory over the past several weeks. If your child has visited the JMS observatory, hopefully you've heard all about it!
As the weather changes, it is important to remember warm weather gear for your students. Please be sure to label hats, boots, mittens, snow pants and all other outdoor gear. With around 800 students in the building, it can be very difficult to locate or identify missing items without labels. Thank you for your support with this!
A few reminders regarding pick-up and drop-off:
- All vehicle drop-offs and pick-ups take place in the front of the building. Cars are not allowed in the back parking lot during drop-off and pick-up. Please help us keep our students safe by adhering to this rule.
- If you are dropping off or picking up, it is preferred that you stay in the car line. An increasing number of families are choosing to park and walk their children up to the front door. Having many pedestrians in the busy parking lot is less safe and adds additional time to the drop-off process. If you do choose to park and walk your child to the door, you must use the crosswalk and wait for the crossing guard to allow you to cross.
- Please be sure your child stays in the car until they are at the front of the pick-up line. Generally, we unload the first four cars at a time.
Thank you for helping us prioritize student safety in our parking lots and walking areas.

Volunteer news
Hello CBPA volunteers and welcome to November!
What a busy week we had this past week with fall parties and ninja math! Thank you to all the volunteers who came in to help with both events. We really appreciate your help in assisting us to pull off these 2 big events!
Please see below for current volunteer opportunities:
November Lunchroom: We will continue to recruit volunteers each month to help in the lunchroom. Volunteers are needed to help with getting the students through the serving line, assisting them while they are eating, helping them during lunch dismissal and wiping down tables. The time is 11 a.m. - 1:45 p.m. However, if you are not able to commit to the entire time - that is ok - we will take whatever time you are willing to offer. Just note in your signup what time you will be volunteering! Please click on the links below to see what days help is needed:
Choir Volunteers: Ms. Dille is looking for 1-2 volunteers to help with choir rehearsals each Tuesday and Thursday from now until the first part of April. Time needed is from 4-5 p.m. You will assist Ms. Dille with attendance, keep students on task and quiet during rehearsals and help with student dismissal and parent pick up. No musical background is needed to volunteer! Please click on the links below to see what dates are available through December:
Restaurant Night Coordinator: Our PTO is currently looking for a volunteer or 2 to take on this fun volunteer opportunity for the 2023/24 school year. Responsibilities include the following:
- research and setup restaurant night events or other passive fundraisers for CBPA families
- coordinate event nights with the PTO to avoid conflicting school or PTO meetings or events
- be the contact for the school with the restaurants and businesses
- provide promotional materials and coordinate the distribution of materials to CBPA families
- work with the volunteer coordinator to determine volunteer needs
- be present at the restaurant or business the day of the event, if necessary
- communicate with the PTO regarding funds that were received and updates regarding the event.
The time commitment would be up to 1.5 hours per month. Previous restaurant night coordinators are available to provide training and insights! Please let me know if this is something you would like to be a part of to raise money for the students of CBPA!
Math Plus Leaders: The purpose of the Math Plus program is to provide additional, on-going mathematical experiences for students in grades K-5. Students participate in math activities that reinforce problem solving, logic and reasoning and communicating mathematical findings. Leaders would come in once a week either before or after school and work with a group of 5-10 students. Time commitment would be 6 weeks or more if you like. Training is provided by the district. Please let me know if this is something you would like to be a part of! Challenge Reading Leaders: In Challenge Reading, volunteers provide children with additional opportunities to foster a love of reading outside of the classroom by introducing various genres of literature, extending students' writing connections and promoting higher level thinking skills. Leaders would come in once a week either before or after school and work with a group of 5-10 students. Time commitment would be 6 weeks or more if you would like. Training is provided by the district. Please let me know if this is something you would like to be involved with! K-Skillbuilder Volunteers: K-Skillbuilders is a program we have for our kindergarten students. Trained volunteers come in (typically once a week), during the school day, and work with specific kindergarten students with literacy and math comprehension activities. We typically start this program during the month of November and it runs continuously throughout the school year. Training is provided by the district. Please let me know if this is something you would like to help with.
Thank you for considering! If you have any questions, please let me know!
