One of our school-wide goals this year centers on the overall attendance rate for our students over the course of the year. Why are we focusing on attendance? Quite simply, there is no better indicator of student success and growth (a year's academic growth in one year of school) than attendance! Students who attend 93% of the school days achieve one year's growth academically at a 99% rate.

We believe that we will achieve all our academic goals if we are able to have students at school each and every day and we are going to communicate our attendance rate weekly to our families!

Last week our overall attendance rate at Edison was 97%. Please keep up the great work by sending your students to school each day.

A quick reminder that our drop off time in the morning at the front steps is 8:55am. We do not routinely have monitors available outside until our doors open so we appreciate all efforts to drop off students at 8:55am or shortly there after. Thank you for your help!

John Schu has made a career out of advocating for the people and things he cares about most: kids, books, and the people who connect them. He is the children’s librarian for Bookelicious and the author of This Is a School (Candlewick, 2022) illustrated by Veronica Miller Jamison, This Is a Story (Candlewick, 2023) illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Lauren Castillo, Louder Than Hunger (Candlewick, 2024), Louder Than Hunger (Candlewick, 2024) and The Gift of Story: Exploring the Affective Side of the Reading Life (Stenhouse, 2022). John Schu lives in Naperville, Illinois.

We have been speaking with all our Edison students this week about our expectations for each and every student at Edison Elementary. We have specific expectations for each grade level and for different areas around school and have shared those below.

Please talk with your students about these expectations. We are so proud of all our students and how they demonstrate the importance of abiding by these expectations. Please let me know if you have questions! Thank you.

Playground

Use equipment for intended use.

Only use school equipment.

Return equipment before starting a new activity.

1st whistle - Return equipment or freeze.

2nd whistle - Line up.

Cafeteria

Enter with eyes forward, body to self and level zero voice.

Hold tray with two hands.

Quickly get food and find your seat.

Along with increased cell phone use in our society, there is an increase in cell phone ownership and use by students of all ages. We understand that parents may need to have cell phone contact with their children before and/or after school, and have created a policy that reflects that need. Please review the following information and let us know if you have questions.

● A student’s cell phone must be turned off and in the student’s backpack while on campus. To have a cell phone at school, a backpack or school bag is required.

● A student’s cell phone is to stay in his/her backpack throughout the school day and until he or she is off the school campus and/or off the school bus.

● A student’s cell phone will be confiscated if out during the school day without permission from staff. Phones can be picked up in the school office by parents or guardians when the student has lost the phone for violating this policy.

Note: Students are allowed to use school phones, with staff permission, as needed.

Other Electronic Devices

Please know the policy for all electronic devices is the same as for Students’ cell phones. These items include, but are not limited to cell phones, smart watches, video games, and others.

Do you know students at Edison have homework each evening during the school year? It's true! All our Edison students should be reading each day at home for 20 minutes or more. If you have a younger aged student who is not yet reading on their own, reading to them for 20 minutes will pay huge dividends in the future. Setting time aside for reading is an important part of developing our academic skills. If you are not doing so already, please set up a time for your student to engage in reading each day outside of school! Thank you for your help and support!

A reminder to all our students and families that the number one indicator of success in school is consistent attendance. Please help us instill in our students the habit of great school attendance. Building this habit now will pay great dividends for our students in their school careers and beyond. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you!

Our drop off area in the morning will continue to be adjacent to the front doors of Edison on H ST. Cars should approach H ST from the north turning toward Edison from 1st ST. Please do not arrive prior to 8:55am as our neighbors and community appreciate our efforts to keep our drop off line from backing up onto 1st ST.

Dismissal takes place at the back gate on Washington ST at 3:30pm. Cars should approach from the south on Washington ST and use street side parking to load their students.

Parents, did you know you are doing a great job if you are setting boundaries including time limits and content monitoring with technology and social media for your kids? You are! Great work and thank you! We know our kids are more likely to thrive when we, as parents, set clear parameters for their technology and social media use. A good rule of thumb for technology and social media use not related to education is ten minutes multiplied by the grade your student is in or 10 minutes for 1st graders, 20 minutes for second graders, 30 minutes for 3rd graders and so on.

CSD STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO TIMBERLAND LIBRARY THROUGH MyTRL!!!

Centralia School District and the Timberland Regional Library (TRL) have formed a partnership to provide students access to a wider range of resources from the library’s electronic services collection. Students will be able to view and check out electronic library resources (ebooks and audiobooks) that are automatically returned. Watch this 2 minute video to learn more. Access to MyTRL will begin January 2, 2023. Parents may choose to opt out of the MyTRL program at any time through Skyward Family Access (directions), or they can submit an (opt-out form) to the school office.
