Maize South High School
A message from Principal Ms. Becky Sailor
Welcome back! We are getting quickly back into the swing of things at Maize South. We were all very excited to see students back in the hallways after a great week of professional learning and Open House. Our Lights, Camera, Connect day was incredibly fast paced and busy, but was a great opportunity for all students to get their picture taken, get to know their new Flex teacher, learn about the USD 266 Student Handbook, and get involved in activities by signing up for clubs at the Club Fair! I’m certain everyone, students and staff, went home exhausted on Thursday. The annual Back to School Carnival is this Saturday, August 19th from 4:00 - 8:00 pm, hosted by the Maize South Football Boosters.
Some of the highlights students learned about during the Student Handbook rotation on Thursday were some of the recent changes including the district attendance policy, high school cell phone policy, student identification, over the counter medication changes, and our common area expectations. We could use help from parents encouraging and reminding students about the district wide expectation for students to wear their student identification on their school lanyard around their neck. We also spent some time discussing our Flex classes, in which students learned more about on Friday. The first Flex Friday early release will be August 25th. The early release incentive on Fridays was created and adopted with the intention to be a positive incentive for students in the areas of focus we have as a district- academics, behavior, and attendance. Flex classes meet at the end of the day on Fridays. Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for early release:
Students may not be on the D/F list
Students may not have any tardies during the week to school or any class
Students must have lower than five absences in all classes
Students must have zero discipline referrals during the week
The early release incentive creates a modified schedule on Fridays. The weekly class schedule has been updated to reflect the Flex Friday incentive.
I am always looking for parents who are interested in being part of our Maize South Site Council. School Site Councils play an advocacy role for schools. It is a group of parents and staff who work together to advise the school on matters such as student learning, education programs, school improvement planning, and accreditation issues. The Maize South Site Council will meet once per quarter in the library at 6:00 pm. Site Council meetings are generally on a Monday and will be scheduled soon. If you are interested in being part of the MSHS Site Council, please fill out this interest form.
Maize South provides daily student announcements at the beginning of each instructional day. Because we are a traveling school and some students are at MCA/MHS every block, not all of our students will be in the building during our daily announcements. To bridge this communication barrier, we provide daily announcements on our school website. You may access the Morning Announcements by clicking on the School tab then looking in the FYI section.
At MSHS we have a staff recognition called Maverick of the Month. Anyone - staff, students, parents, community - can nominate a staff member to receive recognition. We know we have phenomenal individuals making up the staff of Maize South High School. Help us celebrate our staff by nominating any staff member for this recognition. We may not always be aware of all the great things our faculty are a part of and do for our Maverick community, so we appreciate your help in making sure our staff feels valued and recognized for their incredible work. The Maverick of the Month Nomination Form is easily accessible on the MSHS webpage.
Last, but certainly not least, I want to introduce you to and welcome our new Maverick teachers! Many of you have already met some of our phenomenal new teachers during Open House and Conferences. Please welcome to the Maverick community:

Ashley George - English
Audrea Tinkler - FAA

College & Career Center
Greetings!
The College and Career office will once again kick off our year by hosting our annual fall College Career Fair on Monday, September 11th at the Maize Career Academy. Last year over 30 colleges were in attendance. This is a great opportunity for students and their parents to come out and talk with college representatives regarding the admission and financial aid process as well as to see what each school has to offer. In addition, several business representatives will be available to discuss future opportunities for students. These are wonderful opportunities and several businesses assist with paying for students' education.
The goal of the College & Career Center (C&CC), located in the South Office is to provide a variety of resources for college and career planning. Students are invited to use the C&CC as a resource to help navigate the college planning and application process as well as explore various career opportunities. I am typically in the office Monday - Thursday; however, I am happy to set appointments to benefit parents who chose to attend a session with their students from 7 am to 7 pm. To schedule an appointment please email me at lbrown@usd266.com or call my direct line at 316.462.8007.
Our yearly calendar of events will be emailed to students and parents during the September once activities are finalized. Monthly activities to address the needs of students and help them make better informed choices about college and careers will include:
This year, once again, we will host two College Fairs. One in the fall and one in the spring. The Fall College Fair is scheduled for September 11th at the Maize Career Academy.
FAFSA/Scholarship Information Session
College/University visits scheduled for ten (10) different colleges this year.
College & career representatives will be visiting students during lunch periods.
Apply Kansas - This event will assist students as they complete college applications to the school of their choice. College representatives will be available to answer questions and give students tips on the application process.
Here is a link to the 2023-24 Fall Upcoming Events.
I look forward to the opportunity of working with the Maize High School students to help them make better informed decisions and their education and career choices.

Maize South Students Earn National Community-Service Awards
Five Maize South seniors and two new graduates have been recognized by the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and InnerView.org in their sixth annual National Community Service Awards. This program, open to all U.S. high-school students, aims to engage young people in volunteerism and documents their impact.
The three-tier awards recognize a range of student achievement in 2022-2023:
- Andrew Ayotte received a special recognition from the Kroger Co. for his work with zero-hunger programs.
- MaKenna Majors, Kate Quinton, and Ashlyn Van, along with graduates Jana Frady and Grace Tos, each received a Merit Award for more than 20 hours of service.
- Vina Truong received an Honor Award for her more than 40 hours.
All seven awardees were active members in the MSHS chapter of the National Honor Society and earned their awards while fulfilling the chapter’s service goals. Vina Truong also served as the president of the MSHS volunteer club CACOW, the Community Action Club of Wichita, which held two annual campus blood drives on, operated monthly traffic-safety activities, and created new fall and spring voter-registration drives.
Together, more than 150 MSHS students recorded more than 2,000 hours of community service on the InnerView.org platform in the 2022-2023 school year. The web site estimates this as having a community impact equivalent to nearly $50,000. Mavericks volunteered most with projects that supported health, education, and democracy.
InnerView.org allows students to create free individual accounts to record service hours, offers a place for MSHS faculty to post service needs and opportunities, and generates a digital “service resume” that students can use when applying for schools and scholarships.
Students in any grade can create an account at my.innerview.org or email NHS and CACOW sponsor Mr. Bradshaw at mbradshaw@usd266.com.

Copies of the book are available for review at the MSHS North Office.

From the Attendance Office
If you need your student released during the school day, please contact the attendance office at 316-462-8000 as soon as possible so we can get a pass to them. The more advanced notice we have, the easier it will be to ensure your child is able to leave on time.
School Year Reminders
- Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students.
- If your student is going to be tardy to school, please call the office. They are allowed three parent excused 1st block tardies per year, after that they are subject to detention.
- When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the attendance office within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc., these visits won't count against your child's attendance. Medical notes can also be faxed to 462-8001.
- If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please call the office with the time your child needs to be released. They will receive a pass ahead of time and can check themselves out at the requested time. The exception to this, is lunch time. If you wish to check your student out for lunch, a parent must come in and sign the student out. Parents are not required to sign students back in.
- We have a "closed lunch" policy. Students will be expected to eat at school and NO OUTSIDE FOOD may be brought in or delivered.
- If your child is absent and will require homework, please email the teacher.
Thank you for your help with this. We appreciate it!
