Maize Counseling is happy to see all the students back in the building. Counselors are now located in the North and South office. Paige Luna (I-P) and Melissa Bush (Q-Z) are located in the North office. Taluia Pentecost (A-B), Brooke Sorensen (C-H), and Lyn Brown (College & Career) are in the South Office. Important upcoming dates:

• August 22nd - WSU Tech will be coming into their classes to share how to get enrolled for college credit.
• August 23rd - Newman will be in the Auditorium during Flex to help students get enrolled.

The College and Career office will once again kick off our year by hosting our annual fall College Career Fair on Monday, September 11th at the Maize Career Academy. Last year over 30 colleges were in attendance. This is a great opportunity for students and their parents to come out and talk with college representatives regarding the admission and financial aid process as well as to see what each school has to offer. In addition, several business representatives will be available to discuss future opportunities for students. These are wonderful opportunities and several businesses assist with paying for students' education.

The goal of the College & Career Center (C&CC), located in the South Office is to provide a variety of resources for college and career planning. Students are invited to use the C&CC as a resource to help navigate the college planning and application process as well as explore various career opportunities. I am typically in the office Monday - Thursday; however, I am happy to set appointments to benefit parents who chose to attend a session with their students from 7 am to 7 pm. Our yearly calendar of events will be emailed to students and parents during the September once activities are finalized. Monthly activities to address the needs of students and help them make better informed choices about college and careers will include:

• This year, once again, we will host two College Fairs. One in the fall and one in the spring. The Fall College Fair is scheduled for September 11th at the Maize Career Academy.

• FAFSA/Scholarship Information Session

• College/University visits scheduled for ten (10) different colleges this year.

• College & career representatives will be visiting students during lunch periods.

• Apply Kansas - This event will assist students as they complete college applications to the school of their choice. College representatives will be available to answer questions and give students tips on the application process.

Five Maize South seniors and two new graduates have been recognized by the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and InnerView.org in their sixth annual National Community Service Awards. This program, open to all U.S. high-school students, aims to engage young people in volunteerism and documents their impact.

The three-tier awards recognize a range of student achievement in 2022-2023:

• Andrew Ayotte received a special recognition from the Kroger Co. for his work with zero-hunger programs.
• MaKenna Majors, Kate Quinton, and Ashlyn Van, along with graduates Jana Frady and Grace Tos, each received a Merit Award for more than 20 hours of service.
• Vina Truong received an Honor Award for her more than 40 hours.

All seven awardees were active members in the MSHS chapter of the National Honor Society and earned their awards while fulfilling the chapter’s service goals. Vina Truong also served as the president of the MSHS volunteer club CACOW, the Community Action Club of Wichita, which held two annual campus blood drives on, operated monthly traffic-safety activities, and created new fall and spring voter-registration drives.

Together, more than 150 MSHS students recorded more than 2,000 hours of community service on the InnerView.org platform in the 2022-2023 school year. The web site estimates this as having a community impact equivalent to nearly $50,000. Mavericks volunteered most with projects that supported health, education, and democracy.

InnerView.org allows students to create free individual accounts to record service hours, offers a place for MSHS faculty to post service needs and opportunities, and generates a digital “service resume” that students can use when applying for schools and scholarships.

The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline is a coming-of-age dystopian novel that follows the life of a young indigenous Métis boy, Frenchie, who must fight for his survival. The award-winning novel (Governor's General Award 2017, Sunburst Prize, and the 2018 Kirkus Prize) has received acclaim for its character development and approachable prose. Copies of the book are available for review at the MSHS North Office.

• Because students are not allowed to bring balloons or glass items on the bus, the Maize school district will not be accepting any flower, candy, cookie, or balloon bouquet deliveries to students.
• If your student is going to be tardy to school, please call the office. They are allowed three parent excused 1st block tardies per year, after that they are subject to detention.
• When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents to call the attendance office within 24 hours to verify the reason for the absence. Please be sure to provide a doctor's note to the front office when your child has seen the doctor, dentist, etc., these visits won't count against your child's attendance. Medical notes can also be faxed to 462-8001.
• If you need to pick up your child from school during school hours, please call the office with the time your child needs to be released. They will receive a pass ahead of time and can check themselves out at the requested time. The exception to this, is lunch time. If you wish to check your student out for lunch, a parent must come in and sign the student out. Parents are not required to sign students back in.
• We have a "closed lunch" policy. Students will be expected to eat at school and NO OUTSIDE FOOD may be brought in or delivered.
• If your child is absent and will require homework, please email the teacher.

USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education each term during the school year. The online

driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful

of the law; to learn basic driving skills; and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving.

The instructors will provide critical experience to students; involve parents in the process, and

foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment. Students should be

studying the Kansas Driver Handbook and be ready to take a handbook test at the start of the

course. Students that have a Kansas Permit that is valid through the course dates will be

exempt from taking the handbook test. More detailed information on Online Driver Education

can be found on the high school website, (click on Counselor, Enrollment and Course Information, then Driver Education).

Online Driver Education 2023-2024: Both the Student and the Parent/Guardian must attend the

enrollment night in order to be in Online Dr. Ed. Each term class is limited to 50 students.

**Both the Student and one Parent/Guardian will be required to attend the enrollment

meeting. Please bring your enrollment packet, a writing pen, corrective eye wear (if needed)

and any type of Kansas Permit/License you already have to the Enrollment Meeting**
