Mrs. Goodman's Message

Hello Miller Families!

The cooler temps have set in these past few days as we said, "Hello to Fall!" During changing seasons, please consider dressing your child in layers with a sweatshirt and or jacket so they can take a layer off as the day goes on. We also want to remind you to label your child's jacket or sweatshirt with their last name. This will help us get items back to their owner if lost.

This week, our kindergartners will be traveling on their first field trip to Lake Farm Park. Please remember to pack a disposable lunch for your child on the day of their trip. This includes any necessary disposable silverware and napkins. It is important that your child dresses for the weather in comfortable clothes. Raincoats look especially helpful this upcoming week! As always, we will travel with all important medical documents and medications. Should an emergency arise, one of our staff will be in communication with your family.

Finally, I enjoyed visiting many of the classrooms this week to read a story about why we teach and celebrate following our school-wide expectations! I remind all the children that following our school expectations helps us to be safe and ready to learn. When they earn a pom-pom for following an expectation, it gets added to their classroom pom jar. Once their class fills the jar, they have a fun celebration day and add their poms to our school-wide Greenmen Pom Jar. We are hoping to fill our school-wide jar very soon so we can celebrate as a school!

School Counselor Updates: Mrs. Ambrosia

Greetings Miller Families! I had the pleasure of visiting the Kindergarten classrooms to introduce myself and review playground expectations this month. I’m sure your full-day Kindergarten student would love to show you their favorite activities on the playground using these Miller Playground Safety slides. All students did a great job explaining how they can be respectful, responsible and problem-solvers while on the playground!

Part of my role as a school counselor is to connect families with community resources. Clothing Crusade is a non-profit organization based out of Hope Community Church. At no cost, they hold clothing distributions on the fourth Saturday of each month where families can shop for items that they need. In addition, families with specific needs can connect with Clothing Crusade at any time to arrange for clothing. Hope Community Church is located at 3033 Middleton Rd. in Hudson. Aurora City Schools also partners with several community organizations, including our very own PTO, to connect with families in need of community resources, food, clothing, funds for book fairs or holiday shops, and assistance with holiday gifting or celebrations. School Wide PBIS Skill of the Week

Our teaching and reinforcing of school expectations and appropriate choices have continued with another new skill, "I CAN STOP, THINK, AND DO THE RIGHT THING." Being a problem solver is a lifelong skill that children need to practice with daily life experiences. At school, this may look like a child finding a fun treasure that belongs to someone else and wanting to keep it. We use the language, "Stop, think about the OK choice and go do the right thing." The more that we can help children develop their inner thinking skills about what are OK choices, the more often they will do the right thing in a variety of situations. Please keep in mind that being a problem solver at ages 3, 4, and 5 will look different than what older children and even adults would consider an OK problem-solving choice. It's important that we help children develop skills that will help them be respectful and responsible all while being a problem solver.

At home, you can use the same language when your child is faced with a problem. Instead of stepping in and fixing a minor issue, have them explain how they will make an OK choice to solve a problem.

Important Reminder about Birthday Treats & Invitations

Celebrating birthdays and holidays can be a fun tradition for many. We want to remind everyone that we ask that birthday invitations do not come to school so that this can be handled with care from each individual family and not through the schools. Often times there can be hurt feelings or lost items that can become more problematic than intended, so it's best if families take care of this special delivery.

This is also a friendly reminder that all birthday or holiday items that come into school need to be non-food items. With our young children, there are many allergies and family preferences about food and treats so we ask that no food or candy is sent into the classroom except for a specific request from the classroom teacher. Suggested birthday items could be a small item, a book donated to the classroom, or something fun for everyone to enjoy to remember your child's special day. Thank you for your cooperation

Reporting Absences

There will be times when your child is ill or needs to miss school due to appointments.

We ask that you call Miller School at 330-562-6199 to either speak with Vicki Wolf or leave a message. Please share your child's first name, last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence. If they are going to an appointment, please ask for a doctor's note to have on file here at school. Thank you!

If your family will have a planned absence due to an event or vacation, you will need to fill out a planned absence form for our schools. Please send in a note requesting this form as soon as you know your anticipated date.

If your child is experiencing COVID-related symptoms and you have questions for our school nurse, Jackie Pawlowski, you may call 330-954-2286. She can help answer any questions.

Here are some important reminders to ensure the safety of our school community each day:

Check your child each day for illness symptoms. If they begin to feel ill, please know she will assess your child and make contact with a family member when necessary.
Students sent home with a fever, may not return to school until they are fever free without medication for at least 24 hours. This means if your child was sent home on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. with a fever, he/she may not return to school until Thursday. If your child does return the next day, our school will be calling for you to come and pick him/her up. Please help to support our efforts in this area.
Please make sure your Final Forms medical information is up to date. We will closely read the health sections to address any medical concerns.

Finally, please make sure your child has extra clothes in his/her backpack. Accidents and spills happen all the time and it's safe to always have their own clothes in their book bag instead of wearing our spare clothes.
