Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori!
We are thankful to be past our iReady diagnostic and our ASSA Writing Field test. We are settling into a couple of months of high quality Montessori work and learning as we slide towards the ASSA test that will be administered in April to our 3rd-8th grade students. We will also have one more iReady diagnostic mid-May. While Montessori students tend to be critical thinkers and can usually reason their way through most any testing situation, it was evident that the students that had more experience with the iReady platform performed better, were more confident and experienced less test anxiety. iReady is a homework component for every student in our school from kindergarten through 8th grade. Thank you for helping ensure that your child is completing homework daily. Should you have any questions on homework or the iReady platform, we are here for you.
It is inevitable that you and your child will arrive late to school at least one day this school year. When this does happen and you are waiting in the “line of shame” to sign your child in, please be prepared to explain the reason for the lateness. A few ideas are:
-Forgot to charge phone—alarm fail
-Traffic
-Animal/child would not cooperate
-Participated in a lost item hunt in the car/home
-Dog ate homework/had to redo
These late reasons are a point of audit for the State of Arizona and our attendance reporting, not because we are trying to make things any harder for you on that already difficult morning.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Nurse Rose
Students/Staff Covid positive: 3
Close contacts: 1
This week: Our Covid 19 positive cases have dramatically decreased and no close contacts were reported.
Pool testing: We tested 167 students/staff and identified one student who tested positive for Covid-19.
Message to Parents: The District no longer mandates 3 days out for a student experiencing any Covid 19 symptom. The protocol now is no return to school until 24 hours fever free without the use of anti-pyretics. A fever is 100.0 degrees. Parents please keep your student home if they are showing any signs of illness. Let me know if you have any questions/concerns about this updated policy.
Nurse Rose

How to Feel Happy
There are many times in life when we do not feel like the best version of ourselves. When we are struggling to be positive and happy, sometimes you need to “fake it until you make it”. The key is to act like a happy person, even if you don’t feel like it. If you want to feel a certain way, act as if you already do and your brain will make the adjustment.
You can bring joy to others when you are unhappy and in doing so you can improve your own well-being too.
You need to think “What would happy people in your situation do?” “How would they greet others?”
“What little things would they do for others?” Then do those things!
Give it a try!

Primary Garden Teacher Spotlight!
This is Kylie Anderson. She started working full time in the ODE after Ms. Jessica transitioned to a full time position as an IA in one of our primary classrooms. We are grateful Kylie came to our Shaw community. Kylie was a former elementary teacher in Utah, but became a full-time mom to one beautiful boy and moved to Phoenix with her husband. Kylie’s teaching skills have been an amazing asset to our garden and the primary children are benefiting from her experience and love of working in education.
Why does Kylie love the Primary ODE?
“I love watching the students explore and be curious in the garden. It’s so fun to see their faces light up when they discover something new or make connections with things they have learned about in class.”
Some fun facts about Kylie:
Kylie has a major passion for reading and feels there is nothing better than sitting down with a good book… Unless it’s football season. Kylie loves American football and has even stated that her life revolves around the football season, which is usually accompanied by a can of Coca-Cola in her hand as her beverage of choice.
Remember that you can help out both the Primary and Elementary ODE’s by donating your uncrushed aluminum cans. Please drop them off near the Primary Gate Entrance.
Proceeds go to purchasing Chicken Feed.
Think Green,
Stacie Ricks

Garden Update
Greetings!
This was our last week with our red wiggler worms. They will be missed. The good thing is that they have a permanent residence in our garden so the kids can visit them anytime. We are also amending our beds and introducing some compost so that the students may begin planting next week. We will plant all the way up to spring break. Our next block will be SOIL PART II. We will talk about soil temperature, viscosity and get into more science about soil nutrients. Our recently acquired worm knowledge will help with this block.
The parent workday was a huge success! The parents helped beautify the field garden by excavating the perimeter path, putting down tarp and sand, and spreading wood chips. They also fertilized the tree rings, cleaned out the chicken coop and weeded the rows. Thank you so much! We will host one more parent workday in April.
The 7th and 8th grade garden cohort took a field trip to Garfield Elementary. They participated in their garden program lesson and made lettuce tacos. The students gave feedback on the lesson and program that will help shape Shaw’s kitchen program. Thanks to Ms. Patti for helping chaperone and thanks to the garden cohort for being so awesome and helpful!
Half of our tree plantings have been scheduled. APS will work with a group of volunteers and students to plant 10 trees on Monroe St. on March 3rd. The remaining 13 trees are still being scheduled. We can expect to plant them either before spring break or the following week.
We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. NO MORE SINGLE BREW PLASTIC CUPS PLEASE! We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.
We will take your eggshells as well! Please don’t rinse them. The worms love the yolk! Please, NO MORE EGG CARTONS. I have enough to last for several years.
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards

Thank you to Nicole for purchasing our tiny blackboard signs! You are the best!
