Important Changes with the FAFSA/Financial Aid process for the Class of 2024:
The 2024-2025 FAFSA will be delayed due to the new changes in the implementation of the Simplified FAFSA form. The 2024-2025 FAFSA application will become available in December 2023 (previous years it was on October 1st). Some of the new changes to the FAFSA include: fewer questions (decreasing from 108 to 46) and the ability to list more colleges. Students planning on attending college after high school should start learning about the new FAFSA program. Dear parents:
September is national recovery month, and a time to not only remember those who have been lost to a substance use disorder, but also a time to shine the spotlight that treatment does work and that long-term recovery is possible.
Marijuana (also called cannabis) is the most commonly used federally illegal drug in the US, with an estimated 48.2 million people using it in 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at https://www.cdc.gov/marijuana/index.htm
With the legalization of recreational marijuana in Massachusetts several years ago, use among teenagers has become more common than previously used substances like alcohol or stimulants. In 2019, 37% of high school students reported using marijuana, the CDC cites. Additionally, vaping marijuana has increased significantly, including among middle school students.
It has long been a concern among those who study the brain, in that marijuana use among young people changes neural pathways and stunts brain growth. Here at Keefe Tech, we annually screen freshmen students in April for substance use and tend to have more conversations about marijuana's impacts on the brain.
You can visit https://www.cdc.gov/marijuana/health-effects/teens.html to read more about the impact of marijuana on young people.
If your child is interested in getting help for marijuana use, they can attend a marijuana anonymous meeting to hear about how others have recovered from chronic marijuana use. You can visit https://marijuana-anonymous.org/find-a-meeting/ to obtain a list of meetings.
Thank you,
Julia Fairclough LICSW, SAC
