What's Happening??!!
~ Hawley Elementary School Newsletter: September 10, 2023 ~
From the Desk of Mr. Moretti.....
Dear Hawley Parents/Guardians, Teachers, and Staff,
We're back and off to a Terrific Start. The oppressive heat and shortened days were a surprise but did not damper our opening. Students are learning routines and procedures and we are all just happy to be back at Hawley.
Buckle up, stay seated, and keep your hands and feet in the car at all times, as you read on to find out What's Happening at Hawley .....
~ Open House ~
This week we open our doors and Welcome Parents into our classrooms. Open House is a wonderful opportunity for you to come in, meet the teacher a little more than the Walkthrough, learn about your child's day and ways to support them.
Each night begins with me in the gym for opening words (5:30-5:55) followed by classroom presentations (6:00-7:00). My piece is the same each night so if you have students in the lower and upper grades, you do not need to attend that part twice (unless of course you'd like to, it is entertaining ;0).
Tuesday, 9/12: Grades K-2, Gym 5:30-5:55, Classroom Presentations 6:00-7:00
Wednesday, 9/13: Grades 3-4, Gym 5:30-5:55, Classroom Presentations 6:00-7:00
We do like it to be an adult evening only so everyone can focus on the presentations. It is also an evening for overviews not personal conversations about your child. You will sign up for conferences this evening for those conversations or you may set up another time to speak with the teacher privately if you would like to do so before October.
We look forward to this opportunity to strengthen our Home-School Connection. It is vital to our work.
~ Fall Testing ~
We are beginning our Fall Testing. This allows us to get to know where students are, their strengths and weaknesses, so we are able to target our instruction.
We will be giving DIBELS to students in K-3. This is a reading assessment that looks at areas such as phonemic awareness, decoding, and comprehension. iready will begin in grades 2-4 and look at Reading and Math ability. Results will be shared with you.
No preparation is required for these assessments. Just have students rested and in school on time. If you have any questions you could reach out to Carla Tischio (Lead Teacher), Amy Hiruo (Math Science Specialist) or Patti Vitarelli (Language Arts Consultant).
~ School Lunch ~
I have gotten some questions about Lunch Accounts so I will repeat this section from last time.
Click HERE for a Chartwells Newsletter explaining all about School Lunches. You can also access applications for Free/Reduced Lunch on our website: Hawley Page, Parents Tab (on top of screen in blue), Nutrition and Menus tab)

Out of the Mouths of Babes.....
Mr. M does Morning Announcements. When he has a meeting, Ms. Tischio does them. Wednesday, Ms. Tischio did them for the 1st time this year.
" Does anyone have any questions? " Mr. M asked after visiting a classroom
" I have one. " a kindergartener replied
" Yes? " answered Mr. M
" Why were using that silly voice this morning for the Pledge? "
