Grit and Building Agency
After last week's TED Talk from Angela Duckworth about Grit, I stumbled across the TED talk from Anindya Kundu and I appreciated how he suggests that grit isn't enough. We also need to develop students' agencies so they have support and the ability to overcome obstacles. He mentions success in mentors who build the capacity of those he's seen to be successful even in the most daunting of circumstances.
I wonder who was that support and agency-builder for all of us..... there are hundreds of people who have influenced the lives of our collective SHS family. They helped develop our grit and fostered our ability to utilize the resources available so we could discover our successes in life. We are able to show passion and perseverance over long periods of time (grit) because of their support.
Here are two things to think about as we go into this week:
1. Does the person/people who influenced you the most know the extent of their impact on your life? If the answer is no, why not?
2. How do we build systems that develop mentors and agency-builders for our students who need it the most?
We don't have all of the answers, but it we have a growth mindset and believe that ALL of the students and staff at SHS are capable of success, then we figure it out together.

Thank You To:
- The staff for your flexibility with the building projects last week: moving cars to paint the west lot, the east lot being a mess with the beginning of the roofing project over the east gym and pool, and intermittent power outages in the evening as building transformers are replaced (sorry, but those will continue for a few weeks).
- Elaine Miller for organizing and running the hearing screenings for all of our 10th graders and new enrollments in the auditorium on Wednesday.
- All who participated in the WRAL trivia night fundraiser on Thursday.

Mrs. Schnepp's Honors Biology students traveled to the Girl Scouts of Centrail Indiana Program Center last week to meet with the director of STEM experience and former Cardinal, Tara Foor. The students learned about what the Girls Scouts does for girls in the state and a little bit about the property. The students were there to explore the biological and ecological possibilities on site so they can egage visitors of all ages.
