Cathcart Cougar Tracks
An Update on our school community
May 25, 2022
It is with sadness and grief that Cathcart teachers and staff reflect upon the students and teachers who were killed at an elementary school in Uvalde Texas.
We know that Cathcart families and students are reflecting upon this tragedy and trying to make sense of it. Last night, I got an e-mail from a Cathcart family that said, "My son has attended Cathcart since kindergarten. We had a discussion tonight about the incident in Texas and he said he has never done an active shooter drill. Could it be that there have been drills practiced that aren’t labeled as such? I was just hoping to know what precautions, drills/training have taken place or any other information regarding procedures for students should such a horrible event occur at our beloved Cathcart!"
I thought that it would be helpful to share my answer with the whole community:
Cathcart does nine emergency drills a year: fire, earthquake, shelter in place and lockdowns.
There are two lockdown drills to practice what we would do if there were a dangerous person, cougar or major community threat in the Cathcart area. We focus on getting all students into locked, secured areas as soon as possible. This is the active shooter drill.
There is also an extended part of the drill where Cathcart has worked with the school district to plan how students could be transported off campus to Gold Creek Church in the event of a danger at Cathcart.
