From the Principal
Kia ora koutou
I am grateful, the teachers and support staff of Hāwera Primary School are joining with their colleagues all over the country on 9 August to call on the government to give primary and intermediate principals a fair deal. We need your support as we stand up for all principals.
Teachers recently won pay parity with their secondary colleagues, because a teacher is a teacher, regardless of the age of their students. But the government refused to give primary and intermediate principals parity with principals of comparably sized secondary schools, or any support for growing workloads.
Principals work hard for their schools and communities, they deserve a collective agreement offer that reflects their considerable skills and responsibilities. We need to value and support the role so teachers actually want to become principals-especially in our small and rural schools and kura.
In small schools, principals are doing a complex job but often without any extra support, and while teaching as well. These principals are often paid less than some teachers in large schools.
We’re calling on the Government to do the right thing by principals. It’s only fair.
On 9 August, we’ll be wearing green to show our solidarity.
Please support the principals of Aotearoa, who do such a vital job leading the teaching and learning in our schools.

Home School Partnerships
The teachers really enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to come together to share your child's learning journey and find out more about your aspirations for them.
Big thank you also to everyone who provided valuable feedback about our revised report format and new School Interviews digital booking system.
Ms O'Brien and the staff are busy compiling your input and forming our next steps in response. She will share this in a future newsletter. So far the responses have been overwhelmingly positive but there is always room for further improvements and we appreciate your suggestions.
Together we can achieve so much more.
We have gone Green
Today Friday 9th August, school staff, whānau and communities all over Aotearoa are going to show their support for primary principals/tumuaki in their fight with the Ministry to receive parity with their secondary colleagues and a deal that addresses their workload and well being issues.
Principals are the backbone of our schools so let’s show our support for them this Friday by going green.
DISCO FUN-Tonight's the night!
Thank you to one of our senior students Kayla who campaigned long and hard for this fun event. She has worked alongside the teachers to plan and prepare the food, music and decorations.
Well done Kayla, you have done a great job!
TRANSITION TO SCHOOL-IMPORTANT CHANGES!
Any new entrants who start school from Week 9 of this term to the end of the year will go into Room 1 as Room 2 is filling up fast which is great for our school.
If you have a pre-schooler that is due to start school we encourage you to pop in and pick up an enrollment pack as soon as possible so we can arrange your school visits. The last school visitis for 2019 will be before and during week 6 of Term 4 as we are too busy at the end of the year.
From January 2020 cohort (group) entry becomes law. This means that there will be two dates per term which the Ministry decides. These will be the only dates your five year old will be able start, we will not accept four year olds as per the Ministry of Education's advice.
The 2020 cohort entry dates are as follows:
TERM 1 Monday 3rd February and Tuesday 9th March
TERM 2 Tuesday 28th April and Tuesday 2nd June
TERM 3 Monday 20th July and Monday 24th August
TERM 4 Monday 12th October and Monday 16th November
This law applies to all New Zealand primary schools, if you have any questions please come and see us.
The KAHA Way in action
Great to see our students making the most of a rare dry day to be outside enjoying the company of their friends and also choosing to play with someone new.
That's what 'Kotahitanga-Getting on Together' is all about! Nice one kids!
the tortoise and the hare Play
A very funny way of sharing some wise words to live by and a great warm-up for our own upcoming focus on The Arts over the rest of the term. So happy to see our students really enjoying the show! Thank you to the Board of Trustees for sponsoring this event.
Our Enviro Area update
He has also fixed the water damage from the bike track and it is now fully back in action. Our next steps are to put walkways through the area, relocate the monkey bars back into the playgrounds and label all the native trees. The passion projects the classes are working on will further enhance this space. We'll keep you updated as this space develops.
THANKS MAX! It looks great
Wattie’s Cans for Good!
Collect. Educate. Donate!
Welcome to Wattie’s Cans for Good! We’re back again for another year of our exciting national can ‘collection, creation, education and donation’ campaign run by The Salvation Army in partnership with Wattie’s for New Zealand schools.
Thanks to the incredible efforts of the 249 schools and kindergartens who participated in 2018, more than 95,000 cans were donated to Salvation Army foodbanks – restocking shelves in the high demand winter period.
Since Cans for Good began in 1994, nearly 1.5 million cans have been donated and this year through the support of New Zealand schools participating we hope to collect 110,000 cans taking us to a total of 1.6 million cans. With Wattie’s kick starting with 25,000 cans, this will make an incredible boost to local Salvation Army food banks at a critical time of year.
Please have your Wattie's cans to the office by TUESDAY 13th AUGUST. Thanks!!
FUNDRAISING-HELP REQUIRED PLEASE!
FAMILY RAFFLES
If you do not wish to participate please return the sheet to the office as soon as possible. Also if you would like to sell extras please pop in and collect one of our extra sheets.
We would like all money and sheets returned on WEDNESDAY 28th AUGUST. The winners of the $100.00 petrol and $100.00 grocery vouchers will be drawn at assembly on Friday 30th August.
As we did not have a gala this year. All profits will go towards reducing the costs associated with our end of year/camp costs. Please see Ms O'Brien if you have any further questions. Thank you for your support.
