A Message from the Superintendent
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about a partnership we have formed with Collins Aerospace, a Raytheon Technologies company headquartered in Riverside. Collins Aerospace is a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defense industry. They employ over 67,000 employees globally. With sales of $18.4 billion and $3.1 billion invested in research and development, they are a global leader. We have joined forces to provide our students with apprenticeships, internships and other work-based learning programs, and ultimately, future job opportunities and potentially careers for our students.
Collins Aerospace invests in their workforce. Their human resources are their most valued resources. Their workforce ranges from high school graduates to rocket scientists. Like most employers competing in the global marketplace, Collins emphasize the value of skills, rather than just credentials or degrees. They seek people who can take direction, effectively present information, and work as a member of a collaborative team. Problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity are skills they consider indispensable, regardless of the employee's job or role.
Modernizing Our Nation’s Workforce Development System
To ensure our country’s sustained economic growth, and deliver greater opportunity for all Americans, school districts continue to evolve from the 20th century education model, with its emphasis on compliance and conformity, resulting in a workforce with similar skills in a narrow spectrum of talents, to a 21st century education model, with its emphasis on creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.
Both our Generation Z students (currently high school-aged students) and our Generation Alpha students (elementary and middle school-aged students) are engaging with learning in different ways than their parents did when they were in elementary, middle, and high school.
College and career are inseparable in today's education environment. Our instructional strategies, our programs, and our intentions constantly shift to meet the demands of our ever-changing world. How do we accomplish this shift? In three primary ways. First, relative to curriculum, we map creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration throughout the curriculum and across all grade levels. Second, relative to instructional practices, we emphasize giving students voice and choice and encourage them to take full ownership of their own learning. Third, relative to applying the skills students gain in a real-world setting, we continue to build strong partnerships with industry.
Our facilities also have to constantly evolve to provide modernized spaces and emerging technologies to support the type of learning capable of preparing students for college and career. Learn how Measure J, our facilities bond on the November 8, 2022 ballot, supports learner-centered school facilities.
Our success as a school district producing college and career-ready students should be measured by how well we empower our graduates with transferable skills that will hold up to a rapidly changing world.
In Closing....
On behalf of the Board of Education, all young people deserve and need support from all the adults in their lives in order to be the best they can be. Together, we can protect and support our students and increase the likelihood that their futures will be bright.
Thank you for reading my message. Please pass it on.
