Iowa Immunization Law requires:

• All students entering 7th grade to have the Meningococcal vaccine AND a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, or whooping cough) booster before school starts in the fall.
• All students entering 12th grade to have a second dose of the Meningococcal vaccine before school starts this fall. This dose must be given after the age of 16. (One dose meets the requirement if it was received when the child was 16 years of age or older.)

Students WILL NOT be allowed to start school in the Fall of 2021 without proof of these vaccines or a valid exemption on file.

Iowa Law also requires:

• All students entering 9th grade have a dental screening by a dentist or dental hygienist within one year before the start of school, but no later than 4 months after the school year has started.

The multi-purpose room at the Guttenberg campus underwent a major renovation this summer to better accommodate our lunch shifts and serving line, to offer a better place for large gatherings, and to show off the best location in the state for a school: the mighty Mississippi River.

Third grade takes a much-needed recess break to soak up the last bit of summer.

Third graders study living things as one of their Science units. All students received a cabbage plant last year from Bonnie Plants. Students and their families grew the plants and emailed their photos back to school. Here are some of the third graders with their cabbages.

On August 27, the 5th graders had a great science lesson today! We had a special visit from Lynn Campbell. Lynn brought Monarch butterfly eggs and presented a lesson to our fifth graders on Monarchs. We will be raising monarch eggs-caterpillars-chrysalis and releasing them as butterflies for their migration! We had a great day!

Lynn Campbell from Iowa State University brought Monarch butterfly eggs and presented a lesson to fifth graders on the life cycle and migration of Monarchs. Fifth graders are excited to raise caterpillars and watch them grow!

We have hatched monarchs from eggs, grew some and now, Ms. Abbey from Osborne brought us a bunch in different stages of their life. We've had several “j-hook” and turn into a chrysalis! The students are so excited! Monarch butterflies will go through metamorphosis and emerge from their chrysalis in 10-12 days! We will proceed to and release them! Ask your child about all the excitement!

Students in Mrs. Fassbinder's lab class are using the "log" furniture to find their comfy spot and read.

The second grades enjoyed having their teacher, Miss Hansen, read to them in their fun reading corner! 😃

Ms. Geuder, EAGLES+ Teacher

The EAGLES+ goal this year is going to be completing Random Acts of Kindness. The students are going to be completing Random Acts of Kindness this year at school, home, in their neighborhoods anytime they notice someone who may need some help. Some things they can do are to include someone who is playing alone at recess, hold the door for someone, help someone rake leaves or shovel snow, volunteer their time to help someone else with a task, help somebody carry their bags or materials, give someone a compliment, etc. The list is endless. Each student will be keeping track of all of the Random Acts of Kindness they perform. It is not a contest to see who completes the most Random Acts of Kindness. I just want them to see how easy it is to help others, and it often only takes a few minutes.

STEAM Challenge

We often do STEAM challenges where the students build or create something out of recycled materials. I told the second-grade students we were going to do this as soon as we had enough boxes, and toilet paper or paper towel holders. One of the students was so excited that he went home and created a Marble Run out of recycled items. He brought it in to show us. The students had a few suggestions for him so he took it home and fixed a few parts of his game. Then he brought it back and showed it to us. It was awesome!

Clayton Ridge Community School District has both a north and south campus. The northern campus is located in the midst of the rolling prairie of Garnavillo, Iowa and currently serves students in grades PK-5. The southern campus is situated among the picturesque Mississippi River bluffs and boasts a magnificent view of the mighty river and Lock & Dam 10 in Guttenberg, Iowa. The south campus serves middle school (6-8), and high school (9-12).
