Ponderosa PTO Starts New Program
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. —The Ponderosa Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) has started a new program called Dads on Duty to help the City Schools provide middle school students a safe, enjoyable learning environment. The volunteer dads greet students before school opens each morning, welcoming them to school and providing assistance when needed. The Ponderosa Dads on Duty kicked-off their first day by welcoming students back to school with balloons, school stickers, and an outpouring of good humor and good will.
Pondo’s Dads on Duty is modeled on a nationally-recognized program in Shreveport, Louisiana, where a group of volunteer fathers welcome students to school, walk the halls between classes, and play basketball with students at lunch. School spirit improved and discipline problems decreased significantly.
Inspired by their success, Ponderosa Middle School dads are stepping up to build their own program. An initial team of ten dads or community volunteers committed to one 30-minute shift per week, greeting students at the beginning of the school day. If the initial team of ten grows, they may add a lunch hour shift.
Any dad or community volunteer who commits to the program must:
● Complete the Klamath Falls City Schools volunteer application and background check.
● Adhere to all Klamath Falls City Schools guidelines.
● Wear a Dads on Duty vest identifying them as volunteers.
● Be respectful to students, staff, and parents.
● Be responsible and punctual.
“We greeted kids and challenged them to have a great day. Everyone was smiling. If we can help kids start the day happy, encouraged, and ready to learn, that’s a huge win,” said Steve Bitzer, Dads on Duty volunteer.
If you’re interested in learning more or becoming a Dads on Duty volunteer, contact the Ponderosa PTO at: PondoPTO@gmail.com

Destination Imagination
Hello Everyone,
I hope your summer went well. I'm Bill Patterson with The City Schools After School program.
Each year we support Destination Imagination (DI) for kids. DI is a creative problem solving competition for students from K-12. It usually starts the first part of October and can last until the end of May based on how well your team performs. Last year, a team of high school students from KU finished 5th in the world.
Anyone in the Klamath Falls City Schools is welcome to participate, but it can be a long commitment. 21st CCLC will buy all the team passports (Initial Registration fee) and team manager background check fee.
There are usually 3 competitions.
Regional tournament (in Eugene area) in late February. If your team does well, they are invited to the State Tournament.
State Tournament (in Salem area) in early April. If you win, you are invited to Global Finals in Kansas City, Mo in late May
If you are interested and want more information, please email me. We will have an information meeting in late September. If you want more information online about DI, please visit the links below.
