What’s the Learning Café?
The Learning Café is a school-within-a-school alternative program offered within Kodiak High School. The program offers small group and one-on-one learning opportunities for students trying to recover credit. The Learning Café offers a comfortable learning environment that strives to support students in achieving confidence, organization, responsibility and academic progress in non-traditional ways. KHS Counselors refer students to the program and can assist with the application process.

National Depression Education and Awareness Month
Good afternoon, KHS families! Last week I sent out some information regarding Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but October is also National Depression Education and Awareness Month. So, what is depression...? Below are a couple of symptoms that may help you and your student recognize depressive symptoms either in yourself or others:
- Persistent sad, anxious, or empty mood.
- Feelings of hopelessness.
- Irritability, frustration, restlessness.
- Loss of interest in previous hobbies or activities that you used to enjoy.
- Decreased energy levels.
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.
- Sleeping too little or too much.
- Changes in appetite.
- Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or other physical issues that have no clear cause and is not better with treatment.
Especially as we get into the winter months, if you or your student may be struggling with depressive symptoms, please reach out to a mental health provider for assistance – If you are unsure where to start, you can reach out to any of the school counselors, school social worker, or myself, the Providence Mental Health Clinician for assistance. Enjoy your weekend!
