How can poetry support student learning?
Critical Thinking - many poems are not necessarily straight to the point but rather, paint a picture in our minds eye with descriptive language. Comprehension is not always immediate, and thus we analyze the poem to, perhaps, discover hidden meanings, seek personal connections, or understand what the poet is trying to convey. This is helpful in encouraging the brain to think of different things from various perspectives.

ICMI - Part 1
In case you missed it: Gale In Context: For Educators is a lesson planning and instructional tool teachers can use to find and personalize digital learning content, plan remote or in-person learning activities, and provide equity for all of their students. In case you haven't heard, our newest resource for teachers is now accessed via our Canvas platform. You should not be prompted for a password as long as you use your school Google account. The video below can give you a brief overview if you need it. Three departments have had a brief introduction to this new resource but rest assured, more in-depth training is to come.
But WAIT! There's MORE!: ICYMI - Part 2
Our reading challenge site, BEANSTACK is now live as well!! That's right, good news just keeps a'comin'. All adults and students have been "loaded" into our school Beanstack site. But first....a gentle reminder........
Revisit the WHY
Your library media center team at DCHS continues to try ways to boost a culture of reading in our school. Motivating teens (or anyone for that matter) to read is no easy task since social media and gaming are now in the driver's seat. Our hope is that the platform will help us motivate teachers and students to develop or foster a love for pleasure reading and then, find ways to carve out personal reading time into their daily (weekly?) lives.
Customizable challenges (use your imagination!), badging, and rewards (ice cream party anyone?) will entice us all to embrace a book (or ebook/audio book)! Eventually, we will be hooked on the stories in addition to the badges and rewards!
The button above will take you to our school Beanstack site, but.....you can also read and track from the Beanstack handy-dandy app. Check out the video below. 👇
TEACHER FREE DAY AT THE LIBRARY BOOK SALE
On April 19th, from 2 to 7 pm., the Indy Library Store Book Sale invites teachers to take what they need for their classrooms. They must have a teacher (or library staff) ID. If their school doesn't use picture IDs, they should bring a signed letter in hard copy on school letterhead from the principal authenticating their teacher or library staff position.
Please contact Indy Library Store Coordinator Mike Ehret by email if you have any questions!
Remember that Friends of the Library get first dibs on Friday, April 14th. See the Library Store page for more info on dates, hours and pricing.
Seed Library at IndyPL Branches
You can start your vegetable, herb, or flower garden for free! Browse and borrow a variety of seed packets at several of our branches. Get started growing today! New to gardening? We also offer several gardening programs and workshops throughout the growing season.
The Seed Library is now at 19 branch locations and the bookmobile, and includes a collection of seeds designed to address issues of food equity while being inclusive of diverse diets and cooking styles. This year, we also have seed calendars available to help you determine the best time to plant various types of seeds and perform specific gardening tasks.

Coming Up...
An email will be coming your way about a May reading challenge. We'll be using Beanstack to manage our challenge and we hope - hope - hope - to have a high number of participants. An email was sent out last week about accessing your Beanstack account, (teachers), and somewhere in that email was a small (but tasty) incentive to register. Thus far, we've had 3 teachers find it.
