This week at the pool...
7/2- 7/8/2018
Coming Up: Fourth of July at the Pool
We need some adults to help our socials director, Sherri Spritzer, with the crafts and games. Please contact her at sherri.spritzer@verizon.com to volunteer.
Here's what she has planned so far:
11:00 a.m. – Pool Opens
12:00 noon – July 4th craft in the grassy area – we will be making firework decorations – no explosions! Parent volunteers are definitely needed for this.
1:00 p.m. – Water balloon games in the grassy area. Parent volunteers are needed.
2:00 p.m. – Loose Change Scramble in the pool – we will throw coins into a designated area of the pool. Most coins will be American. Find the foreign coin(s) and win a prize! Keep the American coins you find!
3:00 p.m. - Ice Cream Social – Ice cream/popsicle treats (kosher) for all patrons.
4:00 p.m. – Cannonball Contest – Prizes for the top 3 cannonballers! Parent volunteers needed!
5:00 p.m. – Donut Float Relay in the lap lanes.
6:00 p.m. – Pool closes for the evening so everyone can go watch the fireworks!
The grill will be hot and we'll be selling kosher and non-kosher ice cream treats for $2.00 while they last.
No swim team practice on Wednesday.
Water Aerobics a Hit
We had at least 30 women for our first Water Dance Fitness class in the pool last week (photos below)! The workouts continue MONDAY (7/2) at 7:30 p.m..
Every woman we spoke with was thrilled with the level and variety of exercises, the music, and the energy and enthusiasm generated by our instructor, new pool member Miriam Lasar (photo left).
The classes will continue on the following Mondays, all at 7:30 p.m.:
- July 9
- July 16
- July 23
- July 30
- August 6
- August 13 - RAIN OUT/MAKEUP DAY IF NECESSARY
NO CHARGE to KMSC members.
Nonmembers pay $5 per class at the front desk. But we'll reimburse those payments to any nonmember who subsequently joins the pool!
See the 'Roos Swim at Home This Week!
The weather may have been rainy when our swim team's season began (first photo below), but what's a few raindrops when you're already in the water? Nothing to a Kemp Mill Kangaroo!
The team's ~45 swimmers have been working hard to represent the Kemp Mill Pool well in our community (see photos below), particularly this past week when they've had meets on multiple days in a row, including their annual rollicking Relay Carnival.
They're a small team, but they're tough. And as you can see from the photos, they are learning to swim fast but with precision.
Please come out to the pool and SHOW THEM YOUR SUPPORT at their next home meet, which is THURSDAY, JULY 5 when the Rockville Rays will be in 'Roo waters.
The pool will close to non-team patrons at 4, to give the team's parents time to set up for the meet.
But you can buy some dinner from the Kangaroo Kafe (Ben Yehuda's pizza will be available!) and claim a seat with a good view while you wait for the first relay squads and the 8&Under swimmers to start the meet! And wear light blue to show your spirit!

Sunday Fun on the Green
We've got Giant Kerplunk and Cornhole now among our Yard Games at the Pool!
Our socials director, Sherri Spritzer, is making all the magic happen -- but she could use some helping hands to help set up the games, explain the rules, keep bean bags out of the pool, etc., from 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m. on Sundays (because she's also the person handling our Pizza Nights!).
Just mosey on over to the green at about 3 p.m. or send her an email at sherri.spritzer@verizon.com to let he know you'll be helping out.

Pool Advice for This Week's Scorcher
It’s going to be VERY hot this week, with temperatures that feel as high as 105 degrees F. Even if you’re cooling off at the pool, you need to take some precautions:
- Drink LOTS and LOTS of water -- not soda. If you’ve got swimmers on our team, send them to practice and the meet this week with a water bottle!
- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest time of the day. Come to the pool instead of weed your garden or cut your lawn!
- Cover up! Wear light-colored and light-weight clothing, including a cover-up while you’re at the pool.
- Lather sunscreen all over yourself and the kids – even under your cover-ups.
- Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache, nausea or vomiting and dizziness.
- Warning signs of heat stroke may include an extremely high body temperature, unconsciousness, confusion, hot and dry skin (no sweating), a rapid, strong pulse, and a throbbing headache. If symptoms of heat stroke occur, immediately call for medical assistance from the lifeguards!
